I received a swine flu vaccination yesterday. A doctor's office called me around 1 pm to say that a small supply of vaccine had arrived. By 4:30 pm some of that vaccine was in my arm. (They said they had already vaccinated 30 people, out of 100 doses, in that short period, and expected to run out by Friday.)
I was surprised because of all the reports of shortages, including government agencies. A local government just cancelled vaccine clinics for November 2 and 9 because of a lack of vaccine.
The vaccine manufacturers are shipping to all of their customers, not just governments. Since there is not enough vaccine yet available, each doctor or government may receive only a part of what they originally ordered. So someone who calls multiple doctors and pharmacies, and is put on waiting lists, has the best chance of getting vaccine quickly.
It felt just like a normal flu vaccination, almost painless. I have not had any side-effects in the 12 hours since I took it.
Many providers are giving out the vaccine to everyone, not just those on the priority list. News articles have reported this too. It becomes too difficult to police everyone and decide who gets vaccinated and who doesn't.
I received a small card from the government which shows my vaccine lot number along with the standard two page "vaccine information statement". It says that children less than 9 years old need two doses, a month apart, while everyone else just needs a single dose.
