DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Polk County health authorities have sent letters to parents at three schools, warning them about cases of whooping cough.

The county Health Department says at least 11 cases of pertussis have been confirmed. Pertussis is more commonly called whooping cough.

The cases were reported in students at Weeks Middle School, Lincoln High School and Lincoln South...

DES MOINES, Iowa -

Health and school officials, as well as parents, said Wednesday they are very concerned about the rise in pertussis cases in Des Moines.

"Right now, we have 16 confirmed cases of pertussis in the south side area of Des Moines," said Lori Parsons, nurse manager for the Polk County Health Department.

PCHD officials said school-age children and teenagers from Lincoln High School, Lincoln South and Weeks Middle School are being hit particularly hard by the pertussis outbreak...

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) ? Cases of pertussis have soared above the five-year average in Iowa and health officials recommend that parents protect their children by making sure they are vaccinated.

The Quad-City Times reported Saturday that so far in 2012 Iowa had recorded 92 cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough. Officials said that's an 83 percent increase over Iowa's five-year average.

Many of those cases have been reported in Scott and Linn counties, in eastern Iowa. An outbreak also was reported in April in Polk County...

The North Fayette School District is confirming an outbreak of whooping cough. The district reports 15 to 20 school age children have come down with the uncontrollable coughing spells within the last week.

The district issued a letter to parents, available here, which states it is working closely with Palmer Community Health and the Iowa Department of Health in dealing with the disease...

...Clear Creek Amana Schools are also confirming an outbreak of whooping cough, but are not stating how many students are sick...

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Most of the state?s whooping cough cases this year have been reported in Eastern Iowa.

More than 150 cases have been confirmed in Iowa so far in 2012, an increase of 121 percent over this time last year, but not a record number, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Scott County has seen the most cases, with 58, followed by Polk County with 22 and Linn County with 14. Fayette and Benton County have both had 10 confirmed cases and Delaware and Black Hawk, both three.

Six cases have been reported in Dubuque County and two in Buchanan, Winneshiek and Johnson counties...

There are approximately 184% more persons with pertussis disease this year compared to the average of the past five years (the five year average is 83 and 236 cases have been reported so far in 2012). Historically, pertussis activity has been cyclical with increased activity observed every three to five years; therefore the current activity is not unexpected. High levels of activity last occurred in 2004 (1066 cases reported) and 2005 (1106 cases reported), and the number of cases also increased moderately in 2010. No pertussis-related deaths have been reported to IDPH this year.

MASON CITY ? The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health confirmed Wednesday there are 22 suspected or lab-confirmed cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in the county.

?Individuals that are being tested for pertussis need to be on antibiotics for five days before going anywhere in public,? said Karen Crimmings, Health Department disease prevention and investigation service manager...

Public Health: Whooping Cough Cases Need to be Taken Seriously

...There are now 59 cases of the illness in Cerro Gordo County.
Public Health leaders say they are interviewing families with cases .... so they can track the spread, but they want to remind people that if you are contacted, you need to take it seriously..and get on antibiotics...
