The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) is reporting two major earthquake swarms that started up on the morning on August 16 and continue to roll into August 17.

23rd August 2014 14:10 - a small eruption under Dyngjuj?kull

A small lava-eruption has been detected under the Dyngjuj?kull glacier.
The Icelandic Coast Guard airplane TF-SIF is flying over the area with representatives from the Civil Protection and experts from the Icelandic Met Offic and the Institute of Earth Sciences. Data from the equipment on board is expected later today.
Data from radars and webcameras are being received, showing no signs of changes at the surface.
The estimate is that 150-400 meters of ice is above the area.
The aviation color code for the B?r?arbunga volcano has been changed from orange to red.
Some minutes ago (14:04), an earthquake, estimated magnitude 4.5

In der Nacht zum Freitag spuckte Bardarbunga wohl zum ersten Mal seit Beginn seismischer
Aktivitäten vor zwei Wochen Lava aus. Isländische Meteorologen entdeckten nördlich des
Gletschers Vatnajökull einen 900 Meter langen Riss, an dem das brodelnde Magma
an die Oberfläche trat. Grössere Mengen von Asche in der Luft wurden zunächst nicht registriert,
so dass der Flugverkehr weitgehend unbeeinträchtigt blieb. Direkt über dem Vulkan gab es
am Freitag jedoch ein Flugverbot.
Wenige Stunden nach den Eruptionen nahmen die Aktivität offenbar ab. Das Meteorologische
Institut hatte zunächst die höchste Alarmstufe Rot ausgelöst, was bedeutet: Ein
Vulkanausbruch steht unmittelbar bevor oder ist im Gange und ein enormer Ausstoss
von Asche ist zu erwarten. Im Laufe des Freitags senkte das Institut den Alarm auf Orange
herunter. Das bedeutet, dass der Bárdarbunga eine erhöhte oder steigende Aktivität mit
erhöhtem Eruptionspotenzial zeigt.

Askja volcano

The dyke from B?r?arbunga volcano continues its journey into Askja. It has not yet reached Askja magma chamber. When that is going to happen is unclear at the moment.
Activity has been picking up in Askja due to stress changed from the dyke.

B?r?arbunga volcano

Dyke activity continues at similar rate as before. It is now moving about 1 ? 2 km a day according to latest news. The dyke has reached Askja volcano main system, it has not reached Askja main magma chamber. Once that is breached earthquake activity along with harmonic tremor in Askja is going to trough the roof.
Eruption on 23-August-2014 has been confirmed. It only lasted for 1 ? 2 hours before it died down. I think current ideas why it happened are wrong. From my perspective it happened due to magma pressure inside B?r?arbunga magma chamber reaching a high point (highest so far). This did mean that the dyke was not able to tap off the magma chamber at fast enough rate for a short while. Allowing magma to breach the crust at other locations. While this was a short event, this suggests that magma is coming into B?r?arbunga magma chamber at depth. So far the volume that is flowing in is low for the moment. I suspect that might change at any time and without any warning.
The reason why the ice cauldron did not appear sooner is that it took the water some time to dig its own path trough the glacier. Why it did go to Gr?msv?tn lake (Gr?msfjall volcano) I do not knwo.
Earthquake activity remains high in the north end of the dyke. Earthquake activity is present in B?r?arbunga volcano (main volcano), but it is not constant at the moment. That might change without warning.
No dyke activity so far going south of B?r?arbunga volcano.
Cracks appearing in the crust suggest that the dyke depth is only about 2 km at most. This has also allowed for groundwater warning up in areas. This has been seen under areas were the glacier is thin. This is creating hot springs and hydrothermal areas along the dyke path.
Inflation so far is around 40 cm to the east and west. There is nothing to suggest it is going to slow down at the moment.
This might be a long eruption once it starts. How long I do not know. At most some years, as has happened in B?r?arbunga volcano in the past.
Today there has been minor ?quiet? time in B?r?rabunga. Harmonic tremor has been stable and no cycle of up and down has taken place. In my view that might change in next hours. I am already seeing changes in the tremor plot that suggest this.

A small eruption has begun at the end of the magma dyke between Askja and Bardarbunga volcanos in Iceland. What I'm reading is that this is taking place at the fissure swarm, which would be at the northern end, at Askja. But my understanding was that the webcam was looking at Bardarbunga, at the southern end of the dyke. More as I learn more.

The CAM2 webcam on the YouTube video is approximately 30km from the site of the eruption and CAM3 is approximately 60 km., just to give viewers a sense of the distances involved.

Sorry, don't know what I hit but the previous comment somehow posted itself before I finished it, and I can't seem to edit it, so started over

A new and much larger eruption along the same fissure as the last one began around midnight EDT last night and has continued, growing larger especially n the last hour. Its northern end is much farther north than the last one and a new swarm of earthquakes has begun northeast of Askja. Viewing from the webcams is still bad, as high wind gusts continue to shake the cameras. The due storms of the past hour have cleared, however, and the line of lava fountains are clearly visible and growing. The aviation code for Bardarbunga has been lowered to orange (it was at red overnight) since no ash is present. Askja remains at yellow because of the persistent earthquake activity.

I think the eruption will need to be different to produce a lot of ash. Here's a screen cap I took a while ago on Cam 1 (nothing buy gray can be seen on Cam 2). The followers at Jon Frimann's blog speculate that the rain coming down on the lava is causing steam and a little ash.

I've been monitoring Bárðarbunga 2, even though nothing is currently visible. It can clear in a hurry, as it did yesterday. General consensus seems to be that very minimal ash has been produced, if any. It was an effusive, rather than an explosive, eruption. I suspect the geologists are primarily watching Bárðarbunga itself right now, as the M5 and higher earthquakes continue around the caldera there. It's quite amazing to be able to watch this in real time--and speaking of which, Bárðarbunga 2 was just pulled back from its zoomed in position, as I'm typing this, and blue sky is visible now.

For a fissure eruption such as this the concerns are not ash, but SO2 discharge, which when sufficient amounts have accumulated in the atmosphere can create cooling effects and acid rain. Scientists have determined already that what is being erupted is non-evolved magma, that has not degassed and therefore has very high SO2 content.

For now, the fissure is small, but it may continue erupting (on and off) for a year or years, or it may not. The surface area of the fissure (which subsurface is estimated to be @40km at present) may continue to grow from its current 2km, and could unzip the length of the fissure, given time, or it may not, and may remain its current length.

There is still the risk of volcanic eruptions, especially where the opening fissure intersects a volcano. No one has the answers right now.
