Doctors warn whooping cough's spreading rapidly in Treasure Valley

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Health workers say Pertussis, or whooping cough is spreading through the Treasure Valley at an alarming rate. Ada County has seen 25 confirmed cases so far this year, which is four times the average for this time of year. And Canyon County has had 26, matching its total for all of last year.

The health department in Boise hasn't seen this many cases of whooping cough this early on in several years. That's why health workers say we all need to do our part to stop the spread of it...

Health officials urge vaccinations as school year beckons

COEUR d'ALENE - Four months left in 2014 and already the number of whooping cough cases reported in Idaho is double what was reported this time last year.

With the first day of school just weeks away - and spreading of the disease likely to increase - Idaho's Department of Health and Welfare is urging all pregnant women and parents of small children to get vaccinated against pertussis.

Pertussis cases in Idaho are at a record high with 241 cases diagnosed so far this year - 25 of those in Idaho's five northern counties, according to Health and Welfare. In 2013, a total of 237 cases were reported statewide.

Of the reported cases in 2013, 24 were in North Idaho...

Whooping cough on the rise

Health officials are seeing more cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, across the state.

According to Jeff Doerr, epidemiologist at Southeastern Idaho Public Health, Idaho has had 287 confined cases of pertussis from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31. There were 152 total cases during the same time period last year, an 89 percent increase.

Of the 287 cases this year, 11 were in Southeast Idaho. Doerr said health officials are seeing the largest percentage of patients in the Boise-Caldwell and Twin Falls areas.

Statewide, the number of pertussis cases has been increasing since 2009...
