WHITEWATER ? Two cases of mumps have been confirmed on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus.

The University Health Coun?seling Services has been working with the Walworth County Health Department in order to follow proper health guidelines when remedying the cases, confirmed on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

As a result, others who have been in close contact with either of the students are being screened for the disease as well, Ruth Swisher, health director for UHCS, told the Royal Purple campus newspaper...

Mumps update

To our students, faculty and staff,

The DeKalb County Health Department and Northern Illinois University Health Services wish to update you on the status of mumps on campus.

As of today, the number of lab-confirmed cases of mumps at NIU is ten (10). The good news is that the number of cases is small and that the reported cases are currently contained to a well-defined sub-population on campus. In the days ahead we will be taking steps to vaccinate all members of that group in an effort to slow the spread of the disease.

After consulting with experts at the Illinois Department of Public Health, we are not conducting a large-scale vaccination effort on the campus at this time. The vast majority of the students, faculty and staff should be protected after receiving two (2) doses of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine during childhood.

However, we do strongly urge any students, faculty or staff who may not have been vaccinated ? or who are uncertain of their vaccination status ? to do so as soon as possible, either through their personal physician or through the clinic at NIU Health Services for students.

NIU Students Getting Booster Shots Amid Mumps Outbreak

CHICAGO (CBS) ? Hundreds of students at Northern Illinois University have received booster shots, as the university tries to keep a mumps outbreak under control.

The university has confirmed 10 cases of mumps, most recently on Friday.

?So far, all the confirmed cases are among athletes?, according to NIU spokesman Joe King.

CHAMPAIGN ? Remember mumps?

This contagious illness outbreak that began making itself known in the area back in June has continued to gain on Champaign County, with another leap in cases coming this month.

But with most University of Illinois students on their way out of the community for winter break, local health officials are hoping for a mumps slowdown, at least here.

"It's going to slow it down here, but what it's going to do is spread it to wherever they're going," Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Administrator Julie Pryde predicted.

There have been 24 people in Champaign County sickened by mumps so far in December, after only seven new cases in November, Pryde said.

"It was trending down," she said.

That boosts the Champaign County mumps total this year to 197 cases as of Monday, Pryde said. That's about double the number of mumps cases since the end of August...
