Cass County sees rise in whooping cough cases

Cass County health officials are grappling with a sharp rise in pertussis ? commonly known as whopping cough ? confirming five cases in the past six months, including one that resulted in death.

Debby Gebhardt, communicable disease nurse for the Cass County Health Department, said she has never seen so many lab-confirmed cases of the communicable disease in her 26 years with the department.

Many years none will be reported, she said.

The most recent case was confirmed Tuesday. Cases have ranged from infants through adults in several communities, public health administrator Teresa Smith said...

Whooping cough outbreak reported in Winnebago County

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) - The Winnebago County Health Department says it has seen a large increase in the number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases being reported in the area.

There have been 20 cases already in the month of May. Over the first four months of the year there were only an average of one case per month.

Those affected range in age from infant to 64 years old...

Pertussis outbreak confirmed in Greene

Health officials are warning people to take precautions against the highly contagious pertussis following confirmation of cases in northern Greene County...

...In late April, the Cass County Health Department had several cases of whooping cough and more cases continue to surface.

Debby Gebhardt, communicable disease nurse for the Cass County Health Department, said those previous cases have been resolved, but they still see about one or two new cases a month.

?That?s the nationwide trend, that?s not just us in Cass County,? Gebhardt said. ?Schuyler County is experiencing some cases as well, but again we?re following a national trend.?

Seven cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, have been reported in the Tri-County Area, and health department officials are on the alert should numbers increase.

Tazewell County has seen five cases, one of which is in an adult, said Sarah Fenton, the county's director of nursing.

"We commonly have one to two a year," she said. "Having had five cases within the last month and within the last week is a cause for concern, and we're certainly watching it very closely."

Peoria County has two cases of pertussis. Woodford County Health Administrator Laurie Schierer said no cases have been reported in the county. "We're monitoring it very closely of course, " she said...

Whooping Cough Outbreak in Winnebago County

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- The Winnebago County Health Department says right now several school districts in the county are dealing with a whooping cough outbreak...

Since mid-October, 41 North Shore school children have been diagnosed with whooping cough, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health.

Winnetka School District 36 has seen 17 of them ? 14 at Carleton Washburne School, two at Crow Island School and one at The Skokie School. Over Thanksgiving break, the district performed ?enhanced cleaning? on its school to battle the disease, as well as a gastrointestinal illness that?s been reported...

MACON COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT REPORTS INCREASE IN WHOOPING COUGH

The Macon County Health Department (MCHD) reports three laboratory confirmed pertussis (whooping cough) cases and two probable cases in the last week. Like many other states, Illinois is seeing an increase in the number of reported pertussis cases. As of December 1, 2010, there have been 813 cases of pertussis reported in Illinois, compared to 648 cases in 2009....

"We're seeing more whooping cough than we used to," said Dr. Kenneth Alexander, head of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Chicago. That's partly because we live in a global world, Alexander said, but improved diagnostic tests allow health care providers to recognize it more.

In 2010, Chicago had 95 confirmed cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, up from 49 in 2009, according to the Chicago Department of Public Health.
