Second child develops measles in Pilsen migrant shelter, officials say

A second child staying at the city’s largest migrant shelter in Pilsen has developed measles, city health officials announced Sunday.

The child has been hospitalized and remains in good condition, according to a statement from the city’s Department of Public Health.

The first case in the shelter was confirmed Friday. That child has recovered and is no longer infectious. An additional, unrelated case outside of the shelter was announced Thursday — the first in Chicago since 2019.

More than 11,500 migrants are currently staying in 23 shelters across Chicago run by the city and state. The Pilsen shelter, housed in a large warehouse, has drawn scrutiny from volunteers and advocates after a 5-year-old resident died of sepsis.​ ...

Cook County Health warns of potential measles exposure at 2 facilities
The Chicago Department of Public Health announced two additional cases on Monday, bringing the number of reported infections to five.

Cook County Health is warning patients about potential measles exposures within its facilities.

According to a Monday announcement from Cook County Health, the exposures are related to two of the five confirmed measles cases reported by the Chicago Department of Public Health.

The exposures happened at two different facilities, the announcement said.

"On February 27, a patient with measles-like symptoms presented to the Stroger Hospital Emergency Department," the announcement said. "The patient’s PCR test came back positive on March 5. The patient was admitted on February 27 under proper isolation and airborne precautions."

"On March 7, a second patient, who visited CCH’s Arlington Heights Health Center and CCH’s Professional Building, later tested positive for measles," the announcement continued."

Officials at Cook County Health are asking any person who was at the Stroger Hospital Emergency Department, or CCH's Arlington Heights Health Center during the above exposure timeline to contact the CDPH, at 312-743-7216.​..

CDC sending team to Chicago amid measles outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is sending a team to Chicago to help support health officials there after the confirmation of several measles cases.
“CDC is sending a team of experts to support the local response to the recent measles cases with arrival expected tomorrow. CDC continues to recommend the safe and effective MMR [measles, mumps and rubella] vaccination as part of the routine immunizations schedule for all children and adults, with special guidance for international travel. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available,” the agency confirmed to The Hill in a Tuesday statement. ...

Three more people at a migrant shelter in Chicago have been diagnosed with measles, bringing the city's total to eight cases so far this year.

The Chicago Department of Public Health reported Tuesday that three additional people associated with the shelter had been diagnosed. On Monday it said two adults there were diagnosed. That followed a Sunday announcement that a young child residing at the shelter had been hospitalized with measles but was in “good condition.”

All eight measles patients in the city this year have been diagnosed since the beginning of March, according to the health department's statement Tuesday. All but one of them were described as being connected to the shelter, or Chicago’s “new arrivals mission,” the health department said.

The young child who was hospitalized attends Philip D. Armour Elementary School, a public school. The health department advised school-aged shelter residents not to attend school on Friday or Monday.​..

Of the two new cases, both are in children, with one detected at the new arrivals shelter in Pilsen. That brings the total number of measles cases there to eight; two cases are from elsewhere in the city.

The city's largest migrant shelter in Pilsen accounts for 10 of the 12 confirmed cases, according to the Chicago Department of Public Health

​HICAGO — The Chicago Department of Public Health announced Thursday evening that the city now has 12 confirmed cases of measles.

CDPH says within the last week, six adults and six children — 10 of whom are related to the new arrivals at the city’s largest migrant shelter in Pilsen — have contacted the viral infection.

Of the 10 cases at the Pilsen site, two are reportedly Chicago Public Schools students. In a letter, CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said the outbreak would not mirror the COVID-19 pandemic, as more than 90% of Chicago is vaccinated against measles. As such, the city remains at low risk.

The news of a dozen confirmed cases comes one day after Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson discussed the city’s plan to enforce its 60-day limit on migrant shelter stays, beginning on Saturday...

15 measles cases now confirmed in Chicago since beginning of March

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The City of Chicago has confirmed 15 measles cases in just the last two weeks.

The Chicago Department of Public Health Measles dashboard indicated that two new cases were confirmed on Monday of this week – with the other 13 confirmed between Monday, March 4, and Tuesday, March 14.

CBS 2 has learned the two newest measles patients are children who are 4 years old or younger.

As of last week, the city said at least 10 of the measles cases had been linked to a migrant shelter in Pilsen...

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Public health officials on Friday announced the first confirmed case of measles in the Cook County suburbs, linked to an outbreak at a Chicago migrant shelter.

The Cook County Department of Public Health confirmed a suburban Cook County resident was exposed to measles while at a migrant shelter in Chicago. That person was later diagnosed with measles and has since recovered and is no longer contagious.

Health officials were working to identify anyone who might have been exposed to measles after contact with that person. Anyone who was exposed will be offered testing and vaccination...

...Chicago has had a total of 52 measles cases since early March when the Chicago Department of Public Health confirmed the city's first case since 2019. Less than a day later, the city confirmed a case of measles in a child at the migrant shelter in Pilsen.

Since then, the total number of measles cases in Chicago has risen to 52, including 21 in the past week. Chicago Department of Public Health data show 73% of the cases are in children, with 60% of the cases in children 4 or younger.​..

Measles had been virtually eliminated in the United States, but due to the sheer scale of illegal immigration from countries with little to no healthcare, the disease continues to be reintroduced by migrants settling in communities nationwide. Crowded sanctuary cities have proven particularly susceptible to serious diseases brought in by illegal aliens. Now, recent reports indicate that Chicago is in the midst of a measles outbreak in city shelters housing more than 10,400 migrants.​

So far, the measles outbreak is mostly concentrated in migrant shelters in the city but may be spreading. In the first three months of 2024, Chicago has had 31 confirmed cases of measles, 21 of these cases in children under five years old. Even after the city administered 4,500 doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccines to migrants following the first measles case in city shelters, the disease has persisted. Many migrant children staying in these shelters are enrolled in Chicago public schools and pose a risk of spreading the disease to American school-aged children. As of September 2023, more than 2,000 illegal aliens are enrolled in Chicago public schools, with between 40-50 enrolling in a single elementary school. ...

Public health officials confirm measles exposure late last month at suburban Walmart

Public health officials in suburban Stickney confirmed a measles exposure late last month at Walmart in Bedford Park.

According to the Stickney Public Health District, a person with measles related to the outbreak in Chicago was inside the Walmart in Bedford Park on Friday, March 22 roughly between the hours of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Officials said all individuals who were inside the Walmart on March 22 between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. may have been exposed to measles.

The Stickney Public Health District initially sent out the notice on March 27.​..

Symptoms can take 7 to 21 days to appear.

Dr. Juanita Mora, an allergy and immunology specialist, is working with CDPH to help curb the ongoing outbreak. She added that complications from measles could include pneumonia and life-threatening encephalitis or swelling of the brain.​..

​WILL COUNTY, Ill. - A second measles case has been confirmed in Will County and health officials are warning the public of a possible exposure risk.

The person who is positive for measles visited Ascension Saint Joseph Hospital - Emergency Department in Joliet on Tuesday between 1 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., health officials said Friday.

DuPage County confirms first measles case in 15 years

The DuPage County Health Department on Saturday confirmed a case of measles in a DuPage County resident who has received outpatient medical care for the disease.

The first case identified in DuPage since 2009, it does not appear to be linked to the Chicago shelters housing new arrivals. However the source of the infection is unknown, according to health officials. The DCHD is working to identify and notify people who may have been exposed to the virus, according to health officials.

While multiple measles exposure locations have been identified in Chicago, health officials say no exposure locations have been identified in DuPage County. Chicago exposure locations are listed at chicago.gov/measles.​..

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Public health officials on Monday confirmed the second case of measles in the Cook County suburbs this year.

Officials said there was no known link between this case and the recent outbreak of measles at a migrant shelter in Chicago.

The Cook County Department of Public Health said the latest case involved an adult who was not vaccinated, and had spent time at the Super Mercado Torres grocery store at 5310 W. 25th St. in Cicero between April 6 and April 10 while infected.

Anyone who was at the store at the following times might have been exposed to measles:

April 6 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

April 7 between 12 p.m. and 9 p.m.

April 9 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

April 10 between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.​..
