For his part, Deputy Minister of Health, Beatriz Londo?o, said that the Government allocates 11.704 million pesos in the procurement of drugs for the disease and the need for the EPS and public entities to ensure timely access to treatment.
"That's one of the main problems we have in the country. People start consuming the four drugs and some symptoms disappear just drop out of treatment. This is very serious," warned the deputy minister.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and curable infectious disease that spreads through the air: Patients whose lungs harbor the TB bacilli can infect others when they cough, warns the World Health Organization (WHO ).
"For that reason it is important that people who have a cough for more than 15 days become a test to establish whether they have tuberculosis or not. That is the main symptom of risk," the doctor recommended Gilberto Rueda, a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
When the disease is detected early and treated thoroughly, patients quickly stop being contagious and ultimately healing.
What now worries the global health authorities, is the increase in cases of XDR-TB to all known drugs, which makes it deadly.
WHO estimates that by 2015 more than two million people contract a resistant form of the disease. In a report released today, the agency and the global fund which allocates resources to combat TB called on world leaders to collaborate in order to diagnose and treat a million people with TB resistant, 2015.
