Maha: 5 die of cholera in Amravati district

Mumbai: Five people, including two women, have died due to cholera in Maharashtra's Amravati district which has been lashed by heavy rainfall, the state health department said on Wednesday.

The deceased were among 181 people in the district who were recently diagnosed with the water-borne disease, it said.

Large parts of the state have been experiencing heavy showers for the past one week.

An epidemiological surveillance is being carried out in the state on a war footing due to downpour, the health department said.

The cholera outbreak started in Chikhaldara and Amaravati blocks (tehsils) of the district in eastern Maharashtra from July 7 onward, it said.

"The ongoing outbreak is in three villages of Chikhaldara (Dongri, Koylari and Ghana) and one village (Naya Akola) of Amaravati block. Until now, 181 patients have been diagnosed with cholera and five of them - three men and two women - have died," the department said...

Bhubaneswar: Seven people have died of cholera and about 100 others have been affected by the water-borne disease in Kashipur block in Odisha's Rayagada district, an official said on Tuesday.

This was revealed by Rayagada District Collector Swadha Dev Singh based on a report of the ICMR's Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar.

Though initially, we were suspecting it to be diarrhoea, later it came to the fore that people might have been infected to cholera also. They collapsed because they could not get the proper medical attention at the due time, Singh told PTI over phone.

She said now the administration is focusing on early identification of cases based on the symptoms so that they can be provided medical attention immediately...

NUAPADA/BERHAMPUR/JEYPORE: Even as Odisha government claimed that cholera outbreak is under control, the water-borne disease continued its spread unabated as two more deaths were reported from its epicenter in Rayagada district on Tuesday. If that was not bad enough, outbreak of diarrhoea in Nuadapa claimed one life while over 20 people were hospitalised in Komna block of the western district.

So far, 11 people are reported to have succumbed to cholera in Rayagada alone while official figure stands at eight. Besides, three deaths have been reported from Nuapada, Nabarangpur and Koraput districts. In five districts where the outbreak has been seen, over 300 people are affected. Sources said, the two deaths were reported in Kashipur block of Rayagada district. Both the deceased belonged to Tikri. However, district officials denied that deaths were caused by cholera.

Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr LM Routray said the disease is under control in Kashipur. About 63 patients are undergoing treatment and 20 are on observation. As many as 297 villages are under surveillance, he added.

After Rayagada, the outbreak has now spread its tentacles to Nuapada district where Jatgarh village under Komna block reported a death while over 20 persons were affected on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Laldei Hans, a 70-year-old woman from Jatgarh...

Rayagada: Cholera infection, which had subsided in Kasipur block of Odisha’s Rayagada district, has raised its head again with 15 more persons admitted to hospital reportedly due to the disease.

According to official sources, 10 persons of Dengaguda village under Dudukabahal panchayat of the block complained of dysentery and vomiting a few days back. They are undergoing treatment in primary health centre at Tikiri. Their condition was stated to be stable.

Following this, the officials of public health department took the sample of water from the only borewell used by the villagers of Dengaguda for laboratory test. The test report confirmed the presence of cholera bacteria in the water. The department has advised the villagers not to consume the water of the borewell...
