Dead birds flow down Nadia rivers

NADIA: It all started on Monday though the bags were few in number and only a handful noticed it. By Tuesday, the trickle had turned into a steady stream - of bagfuls of chicken carcasses, possibly coming from across the Bangaldesh border, flowing down the Mathabhanga and the Churni in Nadia. "We saw some bags flowing down the Mathabhanga on Monday.
We fished out one and found several chicken carcasses inside. The bags clearly indicate that they are coming from Bangladesh. Only a few bags came yesterday, so we didn't bother. But on Tuesday, their number grew to hundreds," said Sankar Biswas, a cultivator in Krishnaganj-Shibnibash village.
The district administration was prompt to take up the issue. Nadia DM Sanjay Bansal said on Tuesday that samples of the carcasses had been collected and sent for avian flu tests. "They are probably coming from Bangladesh," he confirmed.
