Bangalore reports first swine flu casualty

Bangalore: Swine flu claimed its first victim in Karnataka when a 26-year-old woman succumbed to the virus, pushing up the country-wide toll in the pandemic to 20.

The woman, Roopa, a teacher in a private school, was admitted to St. Philomena Hospital on August seven for pneumonia. Her condition turned critical on August 9 following which doctors tested her for swine flu which turned positive, health authorities said.

She died yesterday.

Roopa, a mother of two children aged between six and four, was also suffering from high blood sugar.

She was attending her school Sudarshan Vidyalaya till last week.

Following her death, health authorities have advised the school to declare a holiday and subject students and Roopa's colleagues to swine flu tests as a precautionary measure.

After teacher's death, students asked to test for H1N1


Bangalore, Aug 13 (IANS) Students of a Bangalore school were Thursday asked to go for swine flu test after a 26-year-old teacher died of the contagious virus.

The teacher, identified only as Rupa, was hospitalised Aug 7 and is the city's first casualty of swine flu that has claimed 20 lives in India.

The Sudarshan Vidya Mandir school, where she taught in kindergarten classes, was already closed till Monday after the swine flu scare in the city.

School principal Hema Narain said the death of Rupa, who was on leave from Aug 5, was a "rude shock" for the school.

"We had no clue she was suffering from swine flu. We have asked children and teachers of the school to get themselves checked," said Narain.

She said the decision on whether to open the school Monday or extend the shutdown was yet to be taken.

"We were supposed to reopen Monday. But a decision on further closure of the school is yet to be taken. We will hold a meeting to decide on extension of school's closure," the principal said.

Rupa died at Bangalore's St. Philomena Hospital after she showed pneumonia symptoms Aug 7. However, only late Wednesday it was confirmed that she was suffering from H1N1 virus.

Hospital director Shankar Prasad said she did not respond to pneumonia treatment. Her throat and nasal swabs were sent to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) here for testing.
