In 1 month, malaria kills 30 in Munger

MUNGER: Five children succumbed to cerebral malaria in Munger in the last 48 hours taking the death toll to 30 since the outbreak of the disease
in the first week of July.

The deadly brain fever is caused by a mosquito bite and is fatal if not treated in time. It has so far affected 1,500 people, said B Sahu, Munger malaria officer. ??Out of serum samples of more than 1,450 people tested in laboratories, 565 were positive,?? he told a news agency.

As the situation is turning grim, a team of eight doctors from New Delhi-based National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme reached Munger on Thursday night. Their job is to establish the cause of cerebral malaria that has spread to 92 villages in Haveli Kharagpur sub-division of Munger.

??The central team, which arrived on Thursday evening, has fanned out in affected areas in four batches with technicians,?? Bihar health department?s joint director-cum-programme officer R N Pandey said at Munger Sadar Hospital.

So far, there is no word from the expert-team headed by joint director, central health services, S N Sharma on the nature of the disease. The team will submit a report to the Centre after its tour of the affected areas.

Twenty people are being treated at Haveli Kharagpur primary health centre and three at Munger Sadar Hospital. Officials said there is sufficient stock of medicines and DDT fumigation has been completed in 72 villages.

??The situation is under control,?? Pandey said. ??The death toll hasn?t gone beyond six,?? Munger civil
surgeon Sreekrishna Chandra Singh added.

Munger (Bihar), Aug 10 (PTI) A four-member central team was on a visit to the affected villages in Munger district today, as five unconfirmed deaths from cerebral malaria were reported in past three days from the area.

Official sources said the deadly brain fever claimed at least 25 lives since the outbreak in the first week of July in 70 villages of Kharagpur sub-division and Dharhara block.

With the unconfirmed report of five more deaths during past three days, the unofficial toll in the disease have climbed to 30.

A four-member central team, led by Joint Director in the Union Health and Family Welfare, Dr S N Sharma was visiting the area since Friday last to probe the circumtanses leading to the outbreak and was camping in neighbouring Jamui.

DDT fumigation drive has been launched in the areas.

The health authorities yesterday decided to conduct a second medical examination of 1,566 persons, suspected to be afflicted by the disease, following revelations that their previous lab tests were done by expired kits.

Though of the 1566 serum samples, 610 were found to be positive, a second test was necessary as the tests were conducted by expired kits, District Medical Officer (in-charge) Dr R R Choudhry had said.

Even the Naxalites, who had made the affected Bhimbandh as their base, were forced to migrate to some other places, police sources said.

Fresh blood sample tests have confirmed 666 persons having cerebral malaria, which has claimed 25 lives in the last fortnight in Bihar's Munger District.

"The tests performed through fresh kits have confirmed 666 out of 1841 patients suffering from high fever or other related symptoms are afflicted by cerebral malaria", Dr B Sahu, a Malaria Officer, said.

Sahu said the need to conduct fresh tests was felt after the authorities found that earlier kits, applied for testing serum samples were expired ones.

Led by Joint Director in the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry Dr S N Sharma, a four-member central team was already camping in the affected villages. It's purpose is to help assist in efforts to identify the cause of spread of the disease in 70 villages of Kharagpur sub-division and Dhrahara block in Munger District.

Five unconfirmed deaths from cerebral malaria have been reported in past three days from the area.

MUNGER ? A two-member UNICEF team on Wednesday visited some villages in the Haveli Kharagpur subdivision of Munger district to take stock of the situation in the aftermath of outbreak of some cerebral malaria cases.

The team was led by Dr Jorge, a foreign health specialist posted at the Unicef?s office in New Delhi. He was accompanied by Dr Kansal, the Patna-based health officer of the UNICEF.

The team inspected the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Haveli Kharagpur subdivisional headquarters and collected the blood samples of patients undergoing treatment there.
