Chikungunya is refusing to let go of its grip on Delhi with patients swamping the hospitals including AIIMS which itself has tested nearly 890 blood test samples positive for the vector-borne disease in the last two months.
Several hospitals in the national capital are reporting increasing cases of chikungunya, including at Safdarjung Hospital where three deaths due to dengue and one due to malaria have taken place this season.
Cases are likely to rise further as the season peaks in September. At AIIMS here, which gets blood test samples from several cities, including from Delhi and neighbouring regions, hundreds of chikungunya samples have been tested positive.
"At our AIIMS laboratories, 885 chikungunya blood test samples have tested positive in the last two months (July- August). Cases are rising and more and more people are getting affected," Lalit Dar of Department of Microbiology at AIIMS said.
The sudden spike in chikungunya cases in Delhi and other parts of north India, has come nearly ten years after a big outbreak of this mosquito-borne disease across the country.
Besides, the city is also battling spiralling cases of dengue which has claimed at least nine lives in Delhi while two people have also died due to malaria this season.
"At our hospital till September 6, 480 cases of chikungunya and 316 cases of dengue have been reported this year. The numbers are likely to rise with the peak of the season this month," Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital A K Rai said. A 65-year-old man today died of chikungunya at a hospital in Delhi, in what could be the first fatality from this vector-borne disease in the national capital. The disease is considered generally as non-fatal.
The victim, R Pandey, succumbed to the disease at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
"He died at the hospital at 4 am. The patient was brought here in a critical condition from Yashodhara Hospital in Ghaziabad on Saturday at 10:30 PM and admitted to ICU. The cause of the death was chikungunya with sepsis," hospital authorities said.

R. Pandey (65) died on September 11 and Ashok Chauhan (62) and Uday Shanaker (61) died the next day. The hospital has admitted 82 patients with chikungunya till date.
On Monday morning, the hospital confirmed the death of a 65-year-old man from Ghaziabad.

Hospitals in the city have reported at least 15 deaths this season due to complications triggered by chikungunya which has also affected over 1,700 people in Delhi. The committee in its report, which was released on Saturday by the Delhi government, has, however, only reviewed nearly 20 cases.Review of some of the cases are still awaited, for ?lack of documents? from the hospitals.

This was the conclusion of the Delhi government?s investigation into the death of 13 people across five public and private hospitals in the city over the past three weeks, all attributed to the mosquito-borne disease.
?Deaths due to chikungunya: nil,? said the death review committee, which also studied seven dengue deaths. It listed two as ?suspected dengue? and rejected one on technical grounds.
The results of three chikungunya-related and four dengue deaths are pending.
Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain refused to comment. ?The report has been shared with you (the media).?
The findings came on a day when Delhi government ministers and the lieutenant governor?s office were locked in a war of words after Najeeb Jung directed deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Friday night to cut short his Finland tour in wake of the sudden spurt in dengue and chikungunya cases in the capital.
Experts said chikungunya virus worsens existing conditions, much like other infections, and pointed out that when people with HIV, that causes AIDS, die of pneumonia and tuberculosis, their deaths are universally certified as AIDS deaths.
?Any viral fever not managed properly can lead to severe complications. If these complications kill, then the virus is listed as the ultimate cause of death,? said Dr Charu Hans, former head of microbiology at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
