Committee to probe state's dengue deaths

GUWAHATI: The state health department on Thursday set up a review committee to look into dengue death cases in the state. With 90 new dengue cases reported from different parts of the state on Thursday, the total number of dengue cases has shot up to 2,854.
A state government source told TOI that the review committee will be interrogating city hospitals and nursing homes from which dengue death cases were reported about whether protocol was followed in dealing with the cases.
So far, Kamrup (Metro) district has reported two dengue deaths. Another one was reported from Kamrup district.

The death of more than 50 dengue patients in eight city hospitals this year offers a peek into the severity of the menace but the extent of the crisis remains unknown in the absence of figures from the government.

To put things in perspective, the disease caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito had claimed less than 20 lives across the state last year.

The Mamata Banerjee government's decision to prefer secrecy to transparency on dengue has raised suspicions of a cover-up among health care experts, who have long been highlighting the administration's alleged failure to launch mosquito-control measures in time.

Health department officials, however, are claiming that the information blackout is aimed at preventing "unnecessary panic".

Since the start of the year's dengue season around four months ago, 17 patients have died of the disease at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals.

A health department official told Metro on the condition of anonymity that the death count at the government-run Infectious Diseases Hospital in Beleghata stood at 14.

The three units of AMRI Hospitals (in Mukundapur, Dhakuria and Salt Lake) have recorded 12 deaths, while three persons have died of dengue at Belle Vue Clinic. Five dengue deaths have been reported at Medica Superspecialty Hospital and three at Peerless Hospital.

Public health experts suspect the actual victim count could be many times more because hundreds of dengue patients are being treated at state-run hospitals and in private hospitals apart from the ones this newspaper has got in in touch with.

Dengue has claimed one more life in the city with a 29-year-old woman, K Rajni, from Sainagar Colony in Saroornagar succumbing to the infection on Friday night.
Sources said Rajni died of dengue shock syndrome while undergoing treatment at a corporate hospital in Banjara Hills soon after delivering twins at a nursing home in Khairatabad.

While district health authorities are yet to officially confirm whether Rajni died due to dengue, sources said the patient was taken to three different private hospitals in the course of treatment, but doctors could not save her because of complications. ?Our people are yet to collect her case reports from the two hospitals where she was taken post delivery . We can confirm only after getting the reports,? said a health department official.

However, there are serious discrepancies on dengue death toll officially cited by the health department in Hyderabad and the actual deaths attributed to the disease.

AHMEDABAD: Records of the city's major hospitals do not match figures given out by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) when it comes to the number of dengue cases and deaths reported in the city.
While the AMC maintains that just three people have died because of dengue since the beginning of the year, the nearly 230-odd major hospitals in the city claim that the number of deaths is 16! At the heart of the controversy lies the AMC's stance that it will only accept "dengue positive" cases tested using National Institute of Virology (NIV) approved test kits, while hospitals across the city have been using imported rapid diagnostic kits for dengue detection.

Jharkhand officially clocked 240 dengue cases this year till October 2 but the figure may be the tip of the proverbial iceberg, as private hospitals and nursing homes don't report to the civil surgeon of the district concerned about any case that might have come to them, Jamshedpur being the notable exception.

According to dengue protocol, all hospitals and nursing homes, state-run, corporate or privately run, must inform respective district civil surgeon about fresh cases so that he, on his part, can collate the figures and report to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), Jharkhand, in Ranchi.

Only by getting the correct dengue figure can health authorities understand the scope of the risk and launch appropriate preventive drives.

But, in Jharkhand, Jamshedpur is the only city where all hospitals report to the state about vector-borne or viral diseases. In other places, including capital Ranchi, private hospitals and nursing homes do not, despite reminders from the health department, as last week's alleged dengue death of a 25-year-old girl in Hatia showed.

Till date, 2,034 dengue infections were confirmed this year in Telangana from over 10,000 suspected cases. The government has claimed three deaths though the tally could be higher if reports of deaths from private healthcare are considered. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare declared dengue a notifiable disease in June this year, making it mandatory for private healthcare to report incidence of disease. Claims of the State?s medical administration, however, suggest that compliance is far from complete.

?Baring a few private institutions, most of the dengue cases data are from government hospitals. Private hospitals are not reporting the disease,? informs Lalitha Kumari, State?s Director of Public Health.

Laxma Reddy visited the district on Tuesday and met ailing patients in most-affected areas, where he stated Telangana was geared up to counter the disease. Khammam had reported an outbreak as early as in September this year when 22 cases were reported from a single PHC in Singarayapalem village. The district has seen a surge in infections in the past week and multiple reports claim a death toll of 23.

However, Dr. Reddy attributed only two deaths to dengue in the State.

Despite a drop in mercury and considerable smoke and pollution in the air, both considered deterrents to the mosquitoes causing dengue, the vector-borne disease continues to plague many parts of the state, including the state capital.

In the last 24 hours, more than 200 fresh cases of dengue have been reported in Lucknow alone.
