Apart from four JE death cases, deaths of two other persons identified as Maheswar Kumar (50) of Kumarpara-Jaljali and Dimbeswar Barua (52) of Outala-Jaljali suffering from Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) have also been reported .

In the meantime news of new AES cases, which can turn JE positive later, are being reported almost everyday over the last few days. According to the district Health Department sources, all persons with JE virus could not be covered under JE vaccination campaign either due to their lack of awareness or floating habitations.

Encephalitis havoc, so far 82 deaths in UP's Purvanchal Encephalitis havoc once again has begun. Encephalitis, who had two "r children in Gorakhpur Medical College, died Ragvdas Baba.
Lucknow. Encephalitis purvanchal havoc in Uttar Pradesh has begun once again. Encephalitis in Gorakhpur Baba, who had two more children died Ragvdas Medical College. Affecting the Medical College from January Encephalitis was admitted 305 children, of which 82 have died so far.
According to information received from Encephalitis is the death of the two children in Gorakhpur district and the other is a Sntkbir city. Since January last year 305 patients suffering from brain fever were admitted here, of which 82 patients have died.
Four more patients suffering from Encephalitis were admitted for treatment on Tuesday, while the 27 patients in the hospital Nehru Medical College, is already undergoing treatment.
According to sources, the patients Gorakhpur medical college admission, Deoria, Gonda, Basti, Sidhdarthangr, Sntkbir Nagar, Kushinagar, Balrampur, Gazipur, apart from Azamgarh neighbor Nepal and Bihar are also patient.

Encephalitis claims 13 lives in Jorhat (Update)

A massive outbreak of encephalitis has claimed 13 lives in Jorhat, Assam.

While six died due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE), seven lost their lives to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Jorhat District.

A total 22 cases of Japanese encephalitis and 12 cases of AES were reported in the district hospitals.

"Today, 34 cases have been reported. Out of that 22 have found to be positive of Japanese encephalitis and others are AES and till now six have died of JE positive and seven of AES," said Joint Director of Health Services, Jorhat, Mobidur Rehman.

the outbreak. House to house fever survey done. All age groups have been
affected. 10 out of 21 serum samples tested at DPL Golaghat were found to be
positive for JE IgM ELISA. All cases treated symptomatically. Source reduction
activities undertaken. Health education regarding personal protection given.

Japanese Encephalitis Claims 52 Lives in Assam

GUWAHATI: Altogether 52 people have died and 318 others have been affected by Japanese Encephalitis this year in Assam with the disease assuming alarming trend during recent months in the state.

Among the worst affected districts are Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sibsagar, Golaghat, Dhemaji and Kamrup (Rural) with 52 deaths and 318 others testing positive since January this year, a senior Health department official said today.

The highest number of eight deaths has been reported from Sibsagar followed by six each in Dibrugarh and Jorhat districts and five in Nalbari since last month.

He said in some districts, cases of acute encephalitis have also been included leading to inflated data but these were not cases of Japanese Encephalitis.

Comment: Assam has also reported 224 cases of AES including 48 fatalities to July 14th. Thus the state fatality toll is around 100. Some of the AES cases are reclassified as JE once confirmatory test results are received. Unlike the official, I am not confident that a negative test result excludes JE as a causative agent in every case. The overlap in time and space of the AES & JE cases suggests a single causative agent in Assam. Not every case of AES will be tested and for those that are, false negatives are not uncommon;

"Overall, the kits had low sensitivities, ranging from 20–60%. The rate of false–negative results was so high that if these kits were used as the only diagnostic test in a population of meningoencephalitis patients in which the true JE prevalence was 13–35%, 40–83% of JEV infections would not be detected."
