India hangings: Fourth woman dies in Uttar Pradesh

A teenager has been found hanging from a tree in a village in northern India, the fourth woman to die in such a way in recent weeks in Uttar Pradesh state.

The family of the 19-year-old say she was raped. A post mortem is under way.

It comes just one day after a woman's body was found hanging from a tree in a remote village elsewhere in the state...

It would seem rape victims are now being killed, presumably in an effort to prevent conviction of the perpetrators.

Investigation of India girls' hangings finds no evidence of rape, murder

New Delhi (CNN) -- The sight of two dead teenage girls hanging from a mango tree in northern India in May shocked India and the world beyond.
Now, a government investigation has concluded that the two cousins, aged 14 and 16, were not gang raped and murdered as police initially said, but took their own lives.
Officials from India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said they didn't know why the girls had committed suicide but suggested it might be because the elder girl was under pressure from her family over a relationship with a man from a different caste -- who was one of those initially accused in the case.

Like many news stories, this began with a flurry of interest & then died down. No doubt that cases of violence against women continue to be widespread in India. In some cases the societal pressure is insidious and mental such as above. In other cases such as the example below, the violence is overt and brutal while couched in false terms of "honour". - Ro

Honour killing: Eight months pregnant girl killed by brothers

In a suspected case of honour killing, an eight months pregnant teenager was strangulated to death allegedly by her two brothers and her body thrown into the Gang canal in Meerut, police said on Friday.

The incident came into light when the 19-year-old girl's body was fished out of the canal on Tuesday, Hastinapur police station in-charge P K Singh said. The victim was allegedly having an affair with a youth from the same village.
