MALAPPURAM : A 14-year-old boy from Pandikkad in Malappuram tested positive for Nipah on Saturday. The National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune confirmed the infection. In the morning, the health department revealed the boy’s samples had tested positive in tests conducted in the state. However, it said it will await NIV’s confirmation, which arrived by evening.

Health Minister Veena George reached the district in the evening to coordinate prevention activities. “NIV, Pune has confirmed the infection. Residents of the Malappuram should remain vigilant. The boy is in critical condition and has been shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital,” the minister said.

The health department revealed that as many as 214 people in the teenager’s contact list are under observation. Of these, 60 people are in the high-risk category. Those under observation will be kept in isolation and the samples of persons in the high-risk category will be collected and tested immediately.​..

...After the boy developed a fever on July 10, he was moved to a private clinic two days later. On July 13, he was taken to a private hospital in Pandikkad and admitted there last Monday. The Kerala government had announced recently that a special action calendar was being prepared for the prevention of a Nipah outbreak.

​......The state government has been advised to conduct active case searches within the family of the confirmed case, the neighbourhood, and other areas with similar topography to identify any additional cases. The state should trace contacts the the identified case had over the past 12 days to monitor for symptoms and prevent further spread of the virus.

Contacts of the confirmed case should be strictly quarantined, and any suspects showing symptoms should be isolated to contain the virus, according to the advisory.

Samples from potential contacts and suspects should be collected and transported for laboratory testing to ensure early detection and response.

To support the state government in managing the outbreak, a multi-member joint outbreak response team from the National ‘One Health Mission’ of the Union health ministry will be deployed. This team will assist in investigating the case, identifying epidemiological linkages, and providing technical assistance.

The ministry said that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had sent monoclonal antibodies for patient management at the state's request. A mobile Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) laboratory for testing additional samples from contacts also arrived in Kozhikode. MALAPPURAM: The test results of samples taken from 13 individuals on the contact list of Nipah victim from Pandikkad, Kerala, will be released on Monday evening. Nine of these samples are being tested at the Virology Lab at Kozhikode Medical College, while four are being analyzed at the Advanced Virology Institute in Thonnakkal.

The results are crucial for Nipah prevention efforts in Kerala, as the 13 individuals include two from Palakkad and four from Thiruvananthapuram. The two individuals from Palakkad are employees of a private hospital where the boy received treatment, while those from Thiruvananthapuram visited the hospital in Perinthalmanna on the same day the boy was treated.

Malappuram: Test results of 9 persons included in Nipa contact list were negative. The samples of 13 people were sent to the Institute of Virology for testing. The results of 9 of them have come now. 406 people are in the contact list of the 14-year-old who died due to Nipah.

There are 194 people in high risk category. 139 of them are health workers. Health workers conducted a survey in 7239 houses in the area where the 14-year-old died of Nipah. 439 people are suffering from fever in these places. 4 of them are in contact with the child. The same virus variant that was detected when Nipah struck in 2023 is still confirmed.

The minister had said that the friends confirmed that the Nipah-affected child had eaten ambhanganga from a nearby field and the presence of bats was confirmed there. Initial assessment suggests that this is the source of the virus. This can only be confirmed by other tests.

The state has been able to identify the Nipah variant in bats and the variant found in humans. The minister also informed that the efforts to detect the presence of virus in fruits are continuing with the cooperation of ICMR.

Masks have been made mandatory in public places in the district. Although strict restrictions have been announced in only two panchayats, the minister reminded that every person has a responsibility to prevent the spread of the disease. Those who are currently under observation are required to spend 21 days in isolation as per the protocol. The minister also said that the strict observation period is 21 days from the time of last contact with the patient.
