Assam floods: 121 dead and over 20 lakh people affected

Conditions in flood-hit Assam continued to worsen as the death toll rises to 121 even as water level of Brahmaputra and its tributaries flowing above the danger mark is showing a receding trend in the affected districts. It is reported that this being one of the worst floods in recent years, over 22 lakh people have been affected caused due to large scale devastation in 2,809 villages in 27 of the 28 districts of the state.

Altogether 105 people have died due to the floods and 16 in landslides caused by incessant rainfall, while 16 people are still missing, they said.

Heavy rain hits normal life in Uttarakhand, Assam, UP

In Uttarakhand fresh spell of rains on Sunday halted helicopter operations to ferry rations to remote districts reeling under shortage of foodgrains. Wet weather also prevented cremation of bodies in Kedarnath, an official said.

The Badrinath highway, which was closed for three hours, was opened for traffic to allow 500 stranded vehicles, including many carrying relief, to move to their destinations.

The state Disaster Management and Mitigation Department is holding an emergency meeting today to discuss how choppers capable of flying even in bad weather can be pressed into service.

Uttarakhand readying to release list of missing persons

NEW DELHI: After seeing the massive rescue operation to its completion, the Uttarakhand government, with the aid of disaster management authorities, is getting ready to release the final list of "missing" persons who can, for all practical purposes, be "presumed dead".

The "missing" database is expected to be ready by the weekend, or July 8, and will be released soon after. Sources overseeing the relief work indicated that though the number of missing may be a few thousands, it would be far less than the 10,000-figure being quoted by some NGOs. The "missing persons" list will not only help bring closure to the fate of the untraced nearly three weeks after the Himalayan tsunami, but also pave the way for tehsildars to start issuing death certificates for the "missing" by July 15. This would pave the way for release of compensation, processing of insurance claims filed by their kin and other legal formalities for inheritance of property.

5,500 may have died in India floods

Authorities have raised to 5,500 the estimated number of people who perished in devastating floods that swept the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand last month.
At least 1,000 residents, pilgrims and tourists have been confirmed killed by the surging waters caused by heavier than normal monsoon rains that washed away homes, hotels, highways and cars.

?The total number of people still missing is 4,500,? Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna told a news conference in mountainous Uttarakhand state capital Dehradun on Monday.

The total death toll in monsoon-related incidents in the state climbed to 112 with two deaths being reported on Tuesday.

Among the deaths, one was reported from Ernakulam district and another from Thrissur district.

In Thiruvananthapuram district, a total of 28 houses were partially damaged causing a loss of Rs 7 lakh. In Kollam district, two houses were partially damaged with the loss estimated at `20,000.

The flood situation in Uttar Pradesh has worsened following heavy rains, and officials said on Wednesday that 116 people have died in the disaster in the past fortnight.
Ten districts have been severely hit by flooding. Sharda, Ghaghra and Saryu rivers are flowing above the danger mark in several districts. Heavy rains continued Wednesday in many places.
People and livestock are being evacuated from the flooded areas and several companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been pressed into service, officials said.

Twelve people were killed on Tuesday in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh taking the toll this monsoon in the state to 116. According to relief commissioner office in Lucknow, lightning claimed two lives in Azamgarh and two in Barabanki in incidents of lightning and house collapse.

Five persons were killed in a landslide triggered by heavy overnight rains in Lohardhunga village near Bhimtal in Nainital district at about 3.30 AM, the district information officer said.


Rain fury continued in Uttarakhand where six persons were today killed in a landslide in Nainital district even as a lake formed by a melting glacier near the Himalayan shrine of Badrinath prompted the Chamoli district administration to sound an alert.

Uttarakhand death toll at 5,360 Scores of houses were damaged in the fresh landslides, triggered by overnight heavy rains

Amid fresh spell of incessant rains in Uttarakhand, seven people were killed and several injured when landslides struck their houses in the hilly Pokhari area of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand early on Wednesday.

“According to our information, seven people who were sleeping in two houses in village Bhikona in Pokhari tehsil were killed in the landslides,” said a senior government official.

The Uttarakhand government on Wednesday put the number of missing people in last month's tragedy at 5,360. It announced that pilgrimage to Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines will resume by September 30.

Kerala monsoon: Death toll hits 116

A total of 116 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state since the onset of the monsoon season with four deaths being reported on Wednesday.

Out of the deaths, one each were reported from Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Palakkad and Kannur. In Thiruvananthapuram, a 60-year-old man was killed when a huge banyan tree fell over a shop.

Father, son killed in season's first major landslide

MUMBAI: Two persons were killed and several trapped when a boulder and a stream of mud rolled down on shanties at Antop Hill on Wednesday morning in this monsoon's first major landslide. Rescue operations were on till night and five were yet to be pulled out.

A sleeping father and son were crushed to death as the boulder first fell on their hut on Mistry Dargah road near the old post office and smashed five other shanties around 8.10am.

The flood situation in Uttar Pradesh worsened on Wednesday as moderate to heavy rains continued to lash the state. At least 120 people have died in the floods across the state.

Officials say two dozen districts have been hit by the floods while 12 of these are severely affected. Over 700 villages have been inundated and a million people are bearing the brunt of nature’s fury. Lakhimpur Kheri is the worst hit where about 150 villages are flooded, followed by Bijnore where 130 villages are inundated. According to the Relief Commissioner’s office, the Sharda, Ghaghra and Saryu rivers are flowing above the danger mark in several districts while heavy rains continued in many places on Wednesday, too.

Bihar floods affect hundreds of villages as water levels rise in rivers

The flood situation has worsened in Uttar Pradesh following the heavy rain and release of water from the Banbasa barrage in Nepal that has flooded all the major rivers, throwing the lives of people living near the banks out of gear.

The death toll in the flood and rain-related incidents in the State has risen to 118 with two more deaths reported during the past 24 hours. The floods have affected around one million people in 47 tehsils of 12 districts of the State and have inundated more than 800 villages.

Bagmati, Mahananda and Kosi rivers in spate; large-scale displacement in four districts

Incessant rains and floods have claimed the lives of 26 people in Bihar. Around 10 people including eight children met a watery grave in Madhepura district on Friday morning when a ferry boat carrying them capsized following heavy rains and strong winds.

Eight bodies have been recovered and search for two more is still on.

Five people were killed in different rain-related incidents. In Hyderabad, where the normal life was affected due to rains for the second day, one woman was killed when a house collapsed in Mangalhat area.

Two people were washed away when flood water from a channel overflowed onto the Kataram-Mahamutharam road in Karimnagar district. A woman died in wall collapse in Adilabad district while another person died of electrocution in Nalgonda district.

More than 100 villages cut off in Coastal Andhra and Telangana regions

Ten persons died ? either washed away or in wall collapses ? as heavy rains battered Coastal Andhra and Telangana regions of the State. Till late on Friday evening, Government confirmed only six deaths.

The casualties include two who were washed away as they were crossing the swollen Sokileru Vagu (rivulet) in Khammam district, four in Karimnagar, two in Visakhapatnam and one each in house collapses reported from Adilabad and the State capital.

More than a 100 villages were cut off as rains continued to batter Coastal Andhra and Telangana regions for the fourth consecutive day on Friday despite the well-marked low pressure area moving away to Madhya Pradesh after weakening. A weather official said the system was likely to fizzle out on Saturday. Torrential rains that lashed most places intermittently in these regions caused flash floods in rivulets and streams and turned residential areas and roads into cesspools.

DEHRADUN: The death toll in last month's massive landslides in Uttarakhand, triggered by heavy rain, is likely to go up after the state government put the figures of those missing at 5748 with chief minister Vijay Bahuguna saying that the government would declare them dead after July 15, a month after the tragedy.

Bahuguna said the state government would start disbursing the compensation amount of Rs 5 lakh for each victim after July 15. Of the missing, the maximum number is from Uttar Pradesh (2098), followed by Uttarakhand (924), Rajasthan (820), MP (811), Maharashtra (283), Delhi (213), Gujarat (126), Haryana (113), Andhra Pradesh (81), West Bengal (77), Bihar (63), Odisha (31), Chhattisgarh (27), Punjab (26), Jharkhand (23), Tamil Nadu (14), Jammu and Kashmir (3) and Pondicherry (1).

Slight improvement in State flood scene (Assam)

GUWAHATI, July 13 ? The overall flood situation in the State has improved today as the floodwaters receded in Chirang and Lakhimpur districts. The flood situation in Dhemaji and Jorhat districts has also improved marginally during the last 24 hours, said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in its flood report this evening.
However, the report stated that the districts of Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Sivasagar are still affected by floods. A total of 17,212 people of 96 villages under seven revenue circles of these districts are affected.

Total seven relief camps, six in Dhemaji and one in Sivasagar, are operational with 1565 camp inmates.

Hoping against hope, Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna today refused to declare as dead the 5,748 persons missing after the June 16 calamity in Uttarakhand, saying the mission to find them will not be given up. However, as the deadline for finding the missing ended, he said the process of paying monetary relief of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of those dead and missing will begin from tomorrow. But if the missing persons are found, the family will have to return the relief money, he said.

Nearly 6,000 pilgrims, tourists and others are believed to have died when flash floods and landslides struck Uttarakhnad last month, officials said on Monday.

PURNIA: At least 27 people, including children, have died due to floods in Bihar.

Purnia district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma confirmed on Monday that 14 people drowned in the Mahananda and the Parman which swept through Baisi sub-division of the district.

Five people were feared drowned in Kishanganj district but deputy magistrate Aditya Kumar Das confirmed only two deaths. All the victims' families were given relief money.

The overall toll in rain-related incidents in the state climbed to 130 with two deaths being reported on Tuesday.
?Out of the two deaths, one each were reported from Kannur and Thrissur. Sreejith, 30, of Muzhappilangad in
Kannur was swept away by a heavy current following rain and Puskaran, 43, of Parappookkara village in Thrissur

Bihar floods claim 11 more, toll reaches 38

PURNIA: With 11 more people drowning, nine in Katihar's extremely flood-prone Barsoi sub-division and two in Baisi sub-division in Purnia, the death toll in the current floods has gone up to 38 in Purnia and Kosi divisions of north-east Bihar.

In Katihar division, four people drowned at Shivanandnagar, Bansgaon, Abadpur and Bitwapur under Barsoi block, two more casualties took place at Kumaripur, one at Chunwa under Kadwa block and two more in Balrampur block on Monday. They were drowned in the swollen Mahananda and Nagar rivers, according to Barsoi SDO Mahendra Paul.

In Purnia's Buwari and Lasanpur panchayats in Baisi sub-division, two people met their watery grave when they were drowned in the swollen Mahananda and Parman rivers, taking the toll in Purnia district alone to 16, according to Baisi SDO Sanjay Kumar.

UP floods: Death toll at 144

Floods in parts of the state continued to devastate the countryside and the death toll in flood-related incidents touched 144, officials said.

Rivers in Bahraich, Barabanki, Gonda and Basti continued to be in spate. Flood waters have entered many villages, displacing thousands. The river Ganga is nearing the danger mark in Allahabad, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ballia and Ghazipur.

Despite predictions by the regional met department of impending rains, the weather in Lucknow and nearby areas continued to be extremely hot Wednesday.
