Swine flu has returned to haunt Andhra Pradesh with two fresh cases reported in Hyderabad today, health officials said.

One person was admitted to Government Chest Hospital and the other to Gandhi Hospital with symptoms of swine flu. The officials have not given the details of the patients.

The fresh cases were reported a day after a 32-year-old man, undergoing treatment since 14 June at a private hospital, died of swine flu in the port city of Visakhapatnam yesterday. Relatives of the deceased said he had gone to east Godavari district for a function last week, where he developed swine flu symptoms.

HYDERABAD: After claiming the life of 30-year-old D Appanna in Visakhapatnam yesterday, swine flu, whom every one had seemed to put out of mind with a sigh of relief, has begun working up a panic again.

There are three patients in Hyderabad now undergoing treatment, including one who is on ventilator. And there has been unconfirmed news of a death in a corporate hospital and that the medical authorities are trying to trace the deceased's relatives.

According to experts, the sudden spurt is probably on account of conditions favourable to the virus. "Usually the virus spreads rapidly when day temperatures are low and this could be one reason why there are a greater number of swine flu cases now," a doctor said. Of the three in hospital, one is a pregnant woman from Zaheerabad in Medak district who is on ventilator in Gandhi Hospital.

Another afflicted person is a 30 year old in the isolation ward in the Chest Hospital. Returning from a visit to Singapore with his doctor wife on June 15, he began exhibiting symptoms and was quarantined. Today, it was confirmed that he was suffering from H1N1. His wife has been isolated at home.

The third victim a 67yearold woman from Mahaboobnagar is also under treatment.

Meanwhile, medical experts are hard put to it to explain why the virus remained dormant during monsoon and winter last year. "Though there were floods in October last year, the virus did not surface. From January, there has been a slow but perceptible rise in the incidence," a doctor at the Chest Hospital said.

The doctor said Appanna died because he was late in seeking medical help though he had not been well after returning from from Annavaram on June 13.

"Had he approached doctors as soon as the symptoms began to show, he could have been saved," he said.

The scare last year was from travellers from abroad. This time it is not so.

People exhibiting swine flu symptoms have been advised to avoid crowded places such as houses of worship and instead approach doctors immediately.
