India swine flu toll rises to 15, 2 victims in RML Hospital

Pune/Delhi, Aug 12 (ANI): A 33-year-old succumbed to the deadly swine flu virus in Pune on Wednesday taking the country?s? swine flu death toll to 15.

The patient died in the Sasoon General Hospital.

Meanwhile, men, aged 22 and 40 respectively, who had been diagnosed with the flu, were said to be in a critical condition at New Delhi?s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Earlier in the day, a doctor and a 29-year-old woman succumbed to the deadly virus in Nashik and Pune respectively.

In Nashik, 38-year-old doctor Rupesh Gangurde died at the Nashik Civil Hospital at around 2:30 a.m. this morning.

In Pune, Shrawani Deshpande died due to bilateral pneumonia following severe lung infection caused by the H1N1 virus at around the same time. 2:30 a.m.

Deshpande, a resident of Kothrud area, died at the Sasoon General Hospital.

On Tuesday, a 62-year old Thane woman and a Vadodara girl had succumbed to the deadly virus.

Shahida Abdul Aziz from Pune was admitted to the Noor Hospital in Bhaikhala and a (H1N1) virus was detected in her body only after her death.

In Vadodara, the girl fell prey to the flu, taking Gujarat?s toll to two.

Meanwhile, doctors in New Delhi have been observing the nature of HINI virus to contain the mortality rate of the disease, Randeep Guleria, professor of medicine said.

?It is a self limiting disease so even if it spreads to the community, most people will become alright without treatment. Our aim should not be from containment point of view but to pick up the higher risk people and those who have higher chance of dying and treat them so that the death rate is low,? Dr. Guleria.

Dr. Guleria also said they are observing the nature of the virus and until it changes its form, it is not a serious concern.

?Serious concern is not there as far as the mortality is concerned. But number of cases will increase. People need to be told that they need not worry. We need to observe it very closely and do good surveillance,? Dr. Guleria, added.

With the increasing number of swine flu cases, the Central Government has unveiled fresh measures to control the spread of disease by allowing private labs to conduct tests and private hospitals to provide treatment. (ANI)

India: Swine flu toll goes up to 15

Nasik, Aug 12 (IBNS) Swine flu has now claimed 15 lives in India. A doctor in Nasik, a 41-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman in Pune succumbed to swine flu on Wednesday.
The 38-year-old doctor Rupesh Gangurde died of the viral infection at the Nashik civil hospital this morning, hospital sources said.

He was admitted to a private hospital on Monday after he complained of vomitting and fever, they said. His blood samples were sent to Pune for testing after which the report tested positive for H1N1.

Gangurde was brought last night to the Nashik civil hospital where he died at 0230 hours, they said.

In Pune, the worst hit city in Maharashtra, 41-year-old Balu Kulund died after being admitted into Sasoon hospital.

Also, Shrawani Deshpande died at 2.30 AM on Wednesday morning following severe lung infection caused by the virus, attending doctors said.

She was brought to the hospital in a serious condition with pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

On Tuesday, five people died of H1N1, the highest in a single day so far. All of them had complications and developed acute respiratory distress syndrome

In what could throw the medicos in a tizzy is a report in a leading US newspaper, which says swine flu may not always be accompanied by fever.

In fact, in a significant number of documented cases, no temperature has been recorded even after some patients deteriorated.

So absence of fever can lead to wrong diagnosis, and underestimation of total number of confirmed cases.

Also, screening at airports will have limitations, as a flu carrier without fever will go undetected through thermal scanners.

As the Centre and the states intensified their battle against the infection, central teams have been despatched to all states and Union Territories after Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad chaired a meeting of 35 additional secretaries and joint secretaries drawn from various ministries who would fan out across the country.

He briefed the teams personally yesterday before they were dispatched to the state capitals.

Mumbai /Pune: With swine flu spreading fast across the country, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday decided to close down schools, colleges, malls and multiplexes in Mumbai as a precautionary measure. The development came even as the death toll from the Influenza A(H1N1) virus rose to 17 with a 50-year-old woman becoming the latest victim of the swine flu in Pune's Sassoon hospital.

The shutdown in the country?s financial capital follows similar measures adopted in Pune, which has become the hotspot of the virus in the country.

According to a senior state government official, schools, colleges and private coaching classes in Mumbai have been ordered to remain closed for the next seven days. Similarly, malls, theatres and multiplexes have been ordered shut for the next three days. Political parties in the state have meanwhile appealed to the people to hold low key 'dahi handi' programmes on Janamasthami to avoid the spread of the virus.

Balu Kuland,33, who died in the Sassoon General Hospital at about 11:00 hrs, was a resident of Pimpri town, near Pune, and was hospitalised three days ago in serious condition, according to Pune Minicipal Corporation (Health Department) chief SR Pardeshi.

48 year old Guatam also lost his life in the Sasoon hospital today.

Two more deaths were reported earlier in the day today, one each in Pune and Nashik.

Rupesh Gangurde, a doctor at the Nashik Civil Hospital, died early this morning ? the city?s first victim from the swine flu virus.

The 38-year-old doctor died of the viral infection, sources at the Nashik Civil Hospital said. He was admitted to a private hospital on Monday after he complained of vomiting and fever, they said. His blood samples were sent to Pune for testing after which the report tested positive for H1N1.

Gangurde was brought last night to the Civil Hospital where he died at 02:30 hours, they said.

Shrawani Deshpande (29) too died this morning at Pune?s government-run Sassoon General Hospital.

Shrawani died at 02:30 hrs following severe lung infection caused by the virus, attending doctors said. Shrawani, a resident of Kothrud area, was admitted to the Sassoon Hospital in a critical condition on August 10 after being referred from Sashwat Private Hospital, they said.

Earlier, a 35-year-old man had succumbed to the swine flu virus at the Sassoon Hospital late Tuesday. Sanjay Mistry, a resident of Pimpri, near Pune, was admitted to the hospital last Sunday in a critical condition and put on a ventilator.

The total number of swine flu casualties in Maharashtra has now gone up to 11. Two more people have died of swine flu in Gujarat and one each in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Currently, there are five critical patients at Pune?s Sassoon Hospital, three at Delhi?s RML and another two at a Mumbai hospital.

Centre, states gear up

Meanwhile, as the Centre and the states intensified their battle against the infection, Central teams have been dispatched to all states and Union Territories after Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad chaired a meeting of 35 Additional Secretaries and Joint Secretaries drawn from various ministries who would fan out across the country.

He briefed the teams personally yesterday before they were dispatched to the state capitals.

While 14 Additional Secretaries would go to the big states, the Joint Secretaries would go to other states and Union Territories. The teams would stay there for two-three days and would return by August 15.

Azad also spoke to all Chief Ministers and told them to step up preparedness.

The Health Minister requested the Chief Ministers to chair the first meeting of these teams so that on-the-spot decisions are taken for swift implementation, a senior Health Ministry official said.

The Central teams will discuss with state governments new guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with record to capacity building issues such as identification of labs for testing and hospitals in private and public sectors for screening, diagnosis and treatment of swine flu patients.

Azad also underlined the guidelines to help private labs and hospitals carry out tests and treat suspected patients. The government had earlier insisted that all patients have to be tested and treated only in state-run hospitals but the enormity of the crisis has forced a change of mind.

Most cases in a day

On Tuesday, a record 119 people tested positive, with the virus spreading to cities like Jammu, Osmanabad, Nagpur, Nasik and Manipal. Of the 1,079 positive cases in India, 589 have been discharged, Health Ministry officials said.

Pune tops the list of casualties with eight deaths followed by Mumbai (two) and one each in Nashik, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Vadodara and Thiruvanathapuram.

Of the 119 positive cases reported Tuesday, Pune, which has been declared the epidemic city, reported 62. It was followed by Mumbai where 24 new cases were recorded.

Swine flu cast a shadow over the World Badminton Championship in Hyderabad, with the doubles coach of the Malaysian team showing symptoms of the viral disease.

Jeremy Gan has been quarantined at the Andhra Pradesh Chest Hospital, and his samples have been sent for testing, organisers of the event said.

With swine flu spreading panic, face masks are flying off the shelf at pharmacy shops in the national capital. Chemists say they are not getting fresh supplies that are being diverted to Pune.

A 17-year-old footballer, S Tongber, from Meghalaya Tuesday tested positive for H1N1 virus, marking the first swine flu case in the Northeast.
