Death of Indian soldier renews fears over rare virus

A Indian soldier has died in West Bengal state of suspected infection by the Nipah virus, an official said Wednesday, heightening fears the rare disease may be spreading.

Nipah, which is mainly spread by bats, is confirmed to have killed 13 people in the latest outbreak which so far has been restricted to the southern state of Kerala.

The soldier was admitted to hospital in Kolkata on May 20, a week after returning from holiday in Kerala, according to defence ministry spokeswoman Dipannita Dhar.

"A soldier, Seenu Prasad, died of suspected Nipah virus in Command Hospital in Kolkata on Sunday," Dhar told AFP.

..According to authorities, the soldier had gone on a month?s leave to Kerala and joined duty on May 13. He was posted at Fort William, the headquarters of the Army?s Eastern Command.
Meanwhile, three patients have been moved to the isolation ward of the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Beleghata in Kolkata after they showed symptoms of viral contamination. Two of them are from Domkal in Murshidabad district and the third is from Ghatal in Paschim Medinipur. The fluid samples of a jawan, who died here days after returning from his hometown in Kerala, has tested "negative" for Nipah virus infection, a defence official said today.

The Command Hospital at Kolkata had sent Seenu Prasad's fluid samples to National Institute of Virology at Pune for the medical test, the official said.
