Minister critical after being afflicted by swine flu

STAFF WRITER 20:38 HRS IST
Kolkata, July 15 (PTI) A West Bengal minister is stated to be in a critical condition after being struck by swine flu as six fresh cases of the infection were today reported taking the total number of those being afflicted to 12 in the city.

West Bengal Water Resources Minister Nandagopal Bhattacharya has been diagnosed with the infection, state health department's nodal officer for swineflu Asit Biswas said here.

Health Minister Suryakanta Mishra said the throat swab of Bhattacharya, already admitted in a city clinic with respiratory distress and brain haemorrhage, has tested positive.

The minister's office in the state secretariat said his condition was critical. "His swab was found positive by the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases," his office said.

West Bengal Water Resources Minister Nandagopal Bhattacharjee, who tested positive for swine flu and was on ventilator after being admitted to a hospital around 10 days ago, is stable and responding to treatment.

'Nandagopal Bhattacharjee is fine. He is responding to treatment very well and is out of ventilation,' state Civil Defence Minister Srikumar Mukherjee told IANS.

Bhattacharjee was admitted to a private hospital with heart and lung problems over the last few days. He also tested positive for H1N1 influenza.

On Friday, no fresh cases of swine flu were reported in the state.

'No confirmed case is reported today. Seven case-patients are in hospital for treatment, one of them is critical. The cumulative confirmed cases of re-assorted Influenza A (H1N1) are 12 persons during 2010,' said a statement by the department of health and family welfare Friday.

In 2009, a total of 135 people were affected with swine flu in the state. All of them recovered.
