Indonesia on Track for Stopping Spread Of Tuberculosis by 2015, Official Says

Jakarta. The Health Ministry says it is optimistic Indonesia can reach the UN Millennium Development Goal on halting and beginning to reverse the incidence of tuberculosis by the 2015 target date.
It said the prevalence rate for the disease in 2009 was 224 per 100,000 people, only marginally higher than the MDG target of 221 per 100,000 people.
“In practical terms, we’ve already achieved the MDG on combating [the spread of] tuberculosis in the country before 2015,” Tjandra Yoga Aditama, the ministry’s director for disease control and environmental health, said at a press conference on Friday.
In 2009, the country’s mortality rate for tuberculosis was 39 per 100,000 people, below the MDG target of 46 per 100,000. The ministry is also claiming major progress on accurately detecting cases of tuberculosis, with a 73.1 percent rate of successful detection in 2009, above the MDG target of 70 percent.
Tjandra said another target the ministry had already achieved was increasing the proportion of tuberculosis cases cured through the Directly Observed Treatment, Short-Course to 91 percent. The MDG target for the number of cases cured through the DOTS strategy is 85 percent.
Despite these figures, tuberculosis remains a major health threat in the country.
