Sulianti Suroso Hospital treats pig flu suspect patient.

Infectious Disease Hospital, Sulianti Suroso, North Jakarta is treating a pig flu suspect patient. Patient is an Australian named John.

John is treated since Tuesday (5/5) at Room IV, Mawar Unit, Sulianti Suroso hospital.

Director of Sulianti Suroso, Sardikin Giriputro said that the patient hasn?t been confirmed to contract H1N1 virus. However, patient is showing pig flu-like symptoms. ?He?s now having intensive examination from our doctor team?.

Patient is also being evaluated by RI Ministry of Health. ?All patients who are diagnosed as pig flu suspect will have repeated diagnosis. Before we confirm the case, nothing to be worried about?, he pointed out.

Sardikin described, pig flu symptoms are fever, coughing, cold, weakness, sore throat accompanied with nausea and diarrhea. Also patient may have contact with pig or pig flu patient.

A staff of Sulianti Suroso hospital said John was referred from SOS Medika Clinic Cipete South Jakarta. Patient is reported having flu after returning from other country.

My father, an Australian expat living in Jakarta, Indonesia is currently in hospital quarantine after returning from Hong Kong last week.

The following is taken from a family member's email sent to me at 4am, 6 May 2009 (Jakarta time):

"After presenting to SOS International with flu symptoms, they had to report his case to the Indonesian health authorities. He had just returned from a conference in Hong Kong where one of the presenters (from Los Angeles) was recovering from a severe flu (they said LA is "hot for the H1N1 flu").

Indonesian Health Ministry requirement is that he is isolated and held pending tests and observations etc. in one of their four designated public hospitals.

They had to do a quick test before they put him in the ambulance, if he was positive then they were going to have to put him in a plastic sealed 'coffin' type bubble - the doctors warned him. But it was negative so both of us only had to wear masks and travel in the ambulance.

Was a long drive, lights flashing and sirens blarring - both doctors that came in ambulance had to wear full quarantine gear with taped up sleeves over the gloves and goggles.

The doc who came in the ambulance said cause the test was negative he thought it was probably going to be Jakarta flu which is very prevalent in Jakarta at present.

But they warned him that just cause it was negative doesnt mean he doesnt have it. It was just a quick test so they knew whether he had to go in a bubble! Indonesian community health requirement.

Hospital staff were in full gear right down to rubber boots and N95's with plastic head shields (like welding shields) over that and big goggles and robes and gloves and masking tape!

They gave him 3 medications before I left - a capsule, 1 panadol and 1 something else. One of them is Tamiflu (I guess?) - SOS Intl. said they would be giving him that - and would probably give it to me as a prophylaxis - but they didn't give me anything.

To go in with him, I have to robe up in a throw away tied on gown, head cap, gloves and N95 mask - pretty special looking.

He wasn't feeling too good when I left. But then it was nearly 2am.

He seems to have slight temp now, has red rash on neck and face when we arrived at hospital. His legs are aching and his chest hurts when he coughs.

Dont know how long they'll keep him - they did blood tests and nose and throat swabs around 1am and took chest xray etc. Guess they'll just keep monitoring and testing til they know what it is. Doc at SOS Intl. said quarantine would be a few days - maybe 3 or 4.

Dad's been way sicker - but then this is just starting but hopefully it will just turn out to be normal flu type situation and just a precaution due to the current world flu situation.

Guess its better to be safe from a community health aspect."

UPDATE #1: He has now been placed in total isolation for 7 days until blood results come back. He is attached to a machine which is monitoring his vitals and the hospital wing has also been isolated as a precautionary measure.

Head of National Committee of Bird Flu Control and Influenza Pandemic Preparedness (Komnas FBPI), Bayu Krisnamurthi said that until now there were no foreigners were indicated positive H1N1 or pig flu.

Previously, two foreign tourists rushed into referral hospitals because suspected to have pig flu infection. “They both detected by thermo scanner, in Surabaya and Jakarta. But they both negative infection, it was only common flu or ILI (influenza like illness) not H1N1”, said Bayu.

In Jakarta, a pig flu suspect patient is treated at Sulianti Suroso hospital, North Jakarta. The expatriate was known to have transit history in Hong Kong before arriving in Jakarta. In Surabaya, Siti Ngaisah – a Banyuwangi resident – was also tested negative pig flu virus. She was reported arrived from Taiwan when thermo scanner of Surabaya airport detected her rising body temperature.

Aussie suspected of H1N1 flu awaits test results

Hospital director Sardikin Giriputro said doctors were intensively examining the Australian national, and were awaiting final test results that would make a clear diagnosis possible.

"When there's a patient whose diagnosis shows symptoms of suspected swine flu, the *final* diagnosis is formed comprehensively. We have to be sure first. As yet there is nothing to be worried about," Sardikin was quoted as saying in beritajakarta.com.

The 53-year-old man suffered from a high fever when he entered the hospital on May 5. A hospital official reportedly said the man was transferred from a clinic in South Jakarta. Tien Rahma, who works at the hospital, said the man was a tourist who arrived in Indonesia from Singapore. - JP

I just spoke to my mother (Friday 8 May 2009 at 4.40pm Jakarta time) who told me that the doctors have not confirmed a negative or positive results yet for my Father.

They told him today they are planning to do a full set of new tests on Sunday...

Dutch tourist with flu symptoms admitted to hospital in Bali

A Dutch tourist arriving in Bali with flu-like symptoms was admitted to hospital in Denpasar for treatment, tempointeraktif.com reported Sunday.

Michele Van Dorssen, a Malaysia Airlines passenger, arrived Sunday from the Netherlands via Kuala Lumpur with a fever and nausea.

Fearing she was sick with the H1N1 strain of flu, officials at Ngurah Rai International Airport immediately took her to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.

?We're still examining her and waiting for the lab results, because [the H1N1 flu virus] has an incubation period of three to five days,? said the hospital's Dr. Ken Wirasandhi.

He added van Dorssen had a fever of 36.9 degree Celsius, but the symptoms were still regular flu symptoms and doctors could not yet determine whether she had H1N1 flu.

Van Dorssen is still being treated at the hospital, after she was given tamiflu for a precautionary measure. (adh)

Denpasar, Bali – A Dutch tourist who is treated at Sanglah hospital because of having high fever, was described only having mild illness. “It seems, it is not H1N1”, said Directorate General P2PL Ministry of Health, Prof Tjandra Yoga Aditama.

This is mentioned by Tjandra through a note, Monday (11/5). As mentioned previously, Michelle van Derson (32), a tourist from Nederland was suspected to contract swine flu infection. She is now under intensive treatment at Sanglah hospital, Denpasar Bali.

Michelle landed at Ngurah Rai Airport through Malaysia Airlined MH 719. During the flight, fever and sore throat, and then reported her condition to the captain. reported having

Michelle was then evacuated subsequently after landed at Denpasar Bali, and being treated at Sanglah hospital. She is placed in isolation unit Nusa Indah and received special examination. This is because the patien is originated from H1N1 infected country.

Tjandra also mentioned that they have followed the complete process according to Standard Operating Procedure, started from the pilot captain, tower, KKP, hospital and laboratory.

Bandung ? The co-pilot of Air Asia, AS, is suspected to have H1N1 of swine flu infection. He is now treated at isolation unit Flamboyant Hasan Sadikin hospital Bandung, which is also a special unit for bird flu or pig flu suspect pastients.

Main director of Hasan Sadikin hospital Bandung, Cissy S. Prawira said that they had sent patient?s blood sample to Jakarta last night. She also suggested the news media not to rush out conclusion that the patient had H1N1 infection.

According to Cissy, AS is a co-pilot and he?s flying regularly to Malaysia and Singapore.

Coordinator of Seaport Health Office, Cirebon, dr Mahfud said the co-pilot had just arrived from Malaysia, Monday evening (11/5). He was observed having cough, cold, fever and sore throat signs when checked by the airport doctor. He was then referred to Hasan Sadikin hospital.

Until today only rapid tests are mentioned and `observations? of clinical symptoms.

Suspected H1N1 carrier looking better

The condition of a Dutch female visitor who had been suspected of suffering from influenza A-H1N1 had reportedly improved on Monday, as Bali remains anxious to prevent any outbreaks of the new flu strain.

With the results of lab tests expected to be released in three days, examinations of the woman's condition showed her health returning to normal in terms of heart rate, blood pressure and physical wellbeing, Sanglah General Hospital director Lanang Rudhiarta said.

Meanwhile, I Ketut Agus Somia, head of Sanglah's Influenza A-H1N1 task force, said the patient had a sore throat on Sunday but was beginning to recover.

"Her symptoms did not indicate that she was suffering from Influenza A-H1N1," Agus said.

"But the diagnoses were varied and therefore we have to make comprehensive observations."

The woman is now being treated in Sanglah's Nusa Dua isolation ward, which has previously been reserved for patients suffering from avian flu and other highly contagious diseases.

The patient had traveled from her hometown in Amsterdam via Kuala Lumpur before arriving at Ngurah Rai International Airport on Sunday.

Several cases of Influenza A-H1N1 have been confirmed in the Netherlands.

With more than 2 million visitors from across the world every year, Bali is vulnerable to diseases.

"We are still waiting for the results of further tests, and therefore we are not yet certain when the patient can go home," Agus said.

Sri Budayanti, head of the Udayana University's Biomedic and Molecular Laboratory, confirmed that her institution had examined the woman's blood sample.

However, she said her lab had tested for the primary H1N1 virus, not the Mexican H1N1 strain.

"The Mexican flu is very specific and deadly. The primary H1N1 virus is like other flu viruses that can be healed properly," she said.

In Indonesia, only the Health Ministry's Research and Development Agency laboratory in Jakarta can accurately detect the Mexican flu.

To prevent Influenza A-H1N1 from spreading to Bali, Sanglah General Hospital has distributed thousands of leaflets on how to treat the disease if it becomes a global pandemic.

The leaflet contains simple steps to reduce risks of contracting flu including through maintaining hygiene, keeping yourself and others informed and isolating any suspect cases.

Try to maintain a distance of more than one meter from others, especially if they appear to be sick, the pamphlet suggests.

"Stay at home as much as possible."

Then, cover any coughs or sneezes with a mask, tissue or elbow, but not with the hands.

"These are measures only necessary in the case of a pandemic. But, people should be prepared now and plan for this," it says.

At this time I believe they are looking into both possibilities. The breathing and the high temperature lean more towards H5N1, than H1N1.

They are treated both with Tamiflu. And they have prepared rooms to treat both H5N1 & H1N1 patients (same room). I assume they'll know enough not put both in the same room....
