Indonesia: Suspected A(H1N1) cases, May 7, 2009 +

Re: Indonesia - Possible Dual Infection of H5N1 and 2009 H1N1

Re: Indonesia - Possible Dual Infection of H5N1 and 2009 H1N1

It said she might have infection. Probably H1N1 or H5N1.
Not both.

Re: Indonesia - Possible Dual Infection of H5N1 and 2009 H1N1

Re: Indonesia - Possible Dual Infection of H5N1 and 2009 H1N1

IMHO the report says they are checking the patient for H5N1 and checking for H1N1. And for other illnesses too I suppose.

The report doesn?t say he is suspected to have both H5N1 and H1N1.

The difficulties in breathing is something that struck me too, but that can have all kinds of causes.

We can watch, watch what they will do.

That's a relief. Holding breath.

Re: Indonesia - Possible Dual Infection of H5N1 and 2009 H1N1

I think they have put the co-pilot h1n1 in a separate hospital.

No, Kiwi, he is in RS Sadikin, which is a designated BF Hospital. There have been numerous article that state they intend to house them in the same quarantined rooms.

I will watch for his symptoms. Other than that, Treyfish has posted, it will be 2 weeks before results.

Re: Indonesia: suspect swine flu patients, may 7 +

Re: Indonesia: suspect swine flu patients, may 7 +

If they are going to house H5N1 and H1N1 patients in the same hospitals, I hope to god that they will at least use seperate isolation rooms. Do we have data that seperate isolation facilities have been set up at the referral hospitals?

Re: Indonesia: suspect swine flu patients, may 7 +

Re: Indonesia: suspect swine flu patients, may 7 +

I have merged this thread back together since it is not a dual infection. If he has H5N1 we can post to that thread. For now we can monitor on this thread.

Thank you to everyone!

They have more than one room where they will house them, and I'm assuming they would keep them separate.

Re: Indonesia: suspect swine flu patients, may 7 +

Re: Indonesia: suspect swine flu patients, may 7 +

The specialist units should be no problem. It is the community hospitals that refer patients onwards, and who may not realise that they are dealing with influenza in its early stages (as opposed to dengue, typhoid etc) I am most concerned about. As has happened numerous times in the H5N1 cases, HCWs have been exposed when misdiagnosis has occurred as PPE and isolation procedures have not been followed, which has then led to H5N1 infections in HCW contacts.

These community hospitals have very limited testing capabilites; I cannot see how they would be able to distinguish an H1N1 suspect and an H5N1 suspect, when they seem to struggle to differentially diagnose H5N1 infections from the other febrile illnesses that are common in Indonesia. This can only be made worse by the fact that fever seems not to present in up to one third of H1N1 infections, even some which are severe. Every patient presenting with breathing difficulties cannot be kept isolated whilst waiting for onward referral from these community centres or during diagnostic procedures - the numbers of dengue, TB, pneumonia and other cases of illness with flu like symptoms in Indo are vast.

The spectre of a dual infected HCW must be a real concern. Perhaps Indo/ WHO should consider providing sufficient prophylactic tamiflu for HCWs in 'hotspots' and extending PPE use to all HCWs in any area that is or has H5N1 virus endemic in the area, including staff in the community centres.

Vibrant62, I was going to take a few sentences out of your comments to say I agree...and then decided to just tell you that I agree with everything you said. :D

P.S. Don't forget to tack on Malaria to that list of ailments.

Re: Indonesia: suspect swine flu patients, may 7 +

Re: Indonesia: suspect swine flu patients, may 7 +

Here's a translation of that ambiguous sentence from an Indonesian friend of mine.

investigation status is the first status for patient who is suspected to be infected by H5N1 or H1N1

His English isn't perfect but he says it's "either or"...not both.

Hospital treats two potential H1N1 sufferers

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Wed, 05/13/2009 3:44 PM | National

Sulianti Saroso Hospital of North Jakarta is treating two tourists who are suspected to have been infected by the H1N1 flu virus, tempointeraktif.com has reported.

The hospital director, Sardikin Giriputro, on Wednesday identified the patients as SL and LC.

?SL is a 54-year old woman from Canada while LC is a 70-year old Hong Kong resident.?

He said LC first arrived in Indonesia on Monday night and was in the country to visit his family.

?We found he was suffering from fever when he was about to leave the airport.?

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport officials then rushed LC to the hospital.

?We believe he was infected by the virus when he was in Hong Kong and it developed [incubation phase] during his stay in Indonesia,? the hospital director said.

He added he did not know exactly the citizenship of SL, but said she had come from Canada and had been living in Tangerang.

?She was brought to the hospital yesterday night.?

To date, the hospital has treated three patients suspected to have contracted the virus. Previously, the hospital examined John, an Australian.

?But he went home on Friday as he was negatively infected by the disease,? Sardikin said.
