Norwalk school district nurses say that a case of Pertusis (whooping cough) has been confirmed at the Eastview/Middle School buildings in town.

In an e-mail sent April 28, Norwalk Middle School/Eastview Nurse Shawna Neifert and High School/Eastview Nurse Diana Duffy write the following:

There has been a confirmed case of Pertussis (whooping cough) at the Eastview/Middle School buildings. Pertussis is spread through the air when the infected person coughs or sneezes in close proximity or is in prolonged contact with others. Therefore Warren County Health Services has advised Norwalk Schools to send notice to parents with students in these buildings. It is important that parents are aware of the symptoms of whooping cough and have their children evaluated by a physician if they have symptoms...

Health officials scramble to contain whooping cough

A potential outbreak of whooping cough appears to be tamped down by public health officials after 59 people in Davenport were tested for the infectious disease.

None, so far, have tested positive beyond the first case that was reported last week.

The illness, actually called pertussis, was found in an adult woman who worked in a Davenport health care agency and possibly exposed up to 45 employees and 145 patients. Pertussis is a bacterial illness that causes coughing attacks, often including a high-pitched ?whoop? upon inhaling. It is especially dangerous for babies and for the elderly.

Scott County Health Department?s medical authorities responded to suggest pertussis tests for those who did and did not have the symptoms of a cough. The 59 individuals volunteered and included the woman?s co-workers and the agency?s patients.

The case was reported to the Scott County Health Department on June 9 and the health care agency where she is employed finished the testing by June 12, according to Roma Taylor, the county?s clinical services coordinator. Officials wanted the tests done before a potentially affected individual took part in weekend activities, she explained.

The tests were conducted by a long nasal swab that reaches back into the throat area. ?We tested as many people as possible,? Taylor said. Of the 59 completed, 39 negative results have been returned so far from the state testing laboratory.

The woman?s name was not provided, and the agency wasn?t named, because of privacy laws.

She was ultimately diagnosed with pertussis after she reported a cough to a doctor in a hospital emergency room. First, however, the doctor believed she had bronchitis. After pertussis was diagnosed, Taylor said the woman never was told by the physician to stay away from others for at least five days while taking medication, the accepted standard for a contagious illness like pertussis...

Health officials warn of whooping cough threat

Whooping cough is here ? and may be more prevalent this year than usual, health officials said.

The Council Bluffs Department of Public Health is investigating several clusters of pertussis (whooping cough) cases, many of which have occurred in city schools.

?With kids returning to the close quarters of classrooms, it?s not unusual for highly infectious diseases like pertussis to easily spread,? said Public Health Director Donn Dierks. ?It?s important for parents to recognize the symptoms of whooping cough so they can help prevent its spread.?

Prevalence is expected to be up this year but not necessarily severe, said Dr. Patricia Quinlisk, state epidemiologist. The state has already seen more than 200 cases, approaching the 200-plus recorded in each of the past few years, she said; but those were mild years compared to 2004 and 2005, when annual totals topped 1,000 cases.

?So it?s going to be a little higher, but nowhere near 2004-2005,? she said...

Camanche schools dealing with whooping cough

About ten cases of whooping cough have been diagnosed in the Camanche school district and officials say they want parents to make sure their students' immunizations are up to date.

Camanche school nurse Kathy Hullinger says she suspects there are more cases of whooping cough that haven't been confirmed. She tells the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier that these are the first cases of whooping cough that she's seen in six years.

Whooping cough cases found in Clinton

Cases of whooping cough are confirmed in the Clinton School District.

The Clinton Herald reports Friday that school officials sent letters to parents with information about seeking treatment if children have symptoms or come in contact with someone who has whooping cough. Michelle Cullen with the Clinton County Health Department says residents should take the warning seriously.

A whooping cough outbreak continues in Scott County, but officials think the situation may be on the verge of stabilizing.

For one thing, the Scott County Health Department went two days last week without receiving a report of pertussis, the formal name for whooping cough. That was in sharp contrast to the daily reports that had come into the department for the past couple of months...

...There have been 131 confirmed and probable whooping cough cases in Scott County since July 1. The Iowa total is 472 cases...
