Strict visitor restrictions have been introduced at Cork University Hospital
following a swine flu outbreak.

Management say the measures are in a bid to stop the spread of the illness
within the facility.

Visiting hours have been restricted to between 2 and 4pm and 6.30 and 8.30
in the evening.

Only one visitor is allowed per patient and children are not permitted to visit.

Flu virus forces CUH to limit visitor numbers

Yesterday, Cork University Hospital (CUH) joined Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and Tralee General Hospital in Kerry in introducing strict visitor restrictions in an effort to curb spread of the illness within the hospital.

Dr Bartley Cryan, consultant microbiologist at CUH, said one patient at the hospital with flu-like symptoms is in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The HSE said there was currently one confirmed case of the H1N1 or swine flu virus at CUH.

Dr Cryan said swine flu was among three strains circulating, but that the current flu vaccine offers protection against it.

?A lot of flu strains, generally speaking, will come from an animal source at some stage, usually pigs or birds. When you get a totally new strain ? such as swine flu in 2009 ? then you have a big population that is not immune and you get a pandemic,? Dr Cryan said.

Three hospitals ban visitors as outbreak of flu spreads


Cork University Hospital along with Cork University Maternity Hospital; Kerry General; and Tralee Community Nursing Unit said they are restricting visitors in light of the situation.

After the Irish Examiner ]revealed earlier this week reported that at least one patient at CUH has contracted the potentially lethal swine flu virus, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre said rates of influenza in general are on the rise.

It said the country is reporting 42 cases for every 100,000 people ? double the normal level. Since the start of 2014, 118 people have been hospitalised with flu with eight deaths and six area-specific flu outbreaks being recorded.

And, coupled with concern raised over the swine flu diagnosis at CUH, health facilities and the public have been urged to be aware of any potential infections.

Kerry General?s manager, TJ O?Connor, said only two visitors will be allowed in per person and no children.

Second Irish hospital confirms it's hit by swine flu


A second Cork hospital has confirmed an outbreak of swine flu.
Mercy University Hospital (MUH) confirmed a single case of swine flu just seven days after Cork University Hospital (CUH) confirmed its case.

A MUH spokesperson confirmed that control measures have been put in place at the hospital to minimise the risk of the infection spreading.

MUH said that only one named visitor per patient is now being allowed each day with no children being allowed visit patients.

The hospital stressed that outpatient clinics will operate as normal.

?There are two (other) cases of influenza and these patients have not contracted the H1N1 strain,? the MUH official said.

On February 20, CUH confirmed it had closed off one ward and imposed strict visitor restrictions after a single confirmed case of swine flu.
