Bird flu spotted in Israel again as outbreaks intensify globally
Since 2021, Europe and the Americas have been suffering from a nearly continuous outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza.

Two gulls were found infected with the H5N1 subtype of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) near Binyamina-Givat Ada and Holon last week, the Agriculture Ministry said on Saturday.

The ministry added that at the beginning of January, a common teal was found infected with the virus in Bet Halevi, near Netanya, and a peregrine falcon was found infected near Hulata in northern Israel.

The outbreaks are the latest reported this season in Israel. Several other outbreaks were reported late last year, with the first outbreak of the season reported in September at a petting zoo including over 200 peacocks, geese, ducks, guinea fowls, chickens, doves, and parakeets in Sde Ya'akov in northern Israel.​..

Dozens of crane carcasses alongside dozens of dying cranes have been found in the last two weeks in the Hula Valley and its surroundings, and now there is a growing fear of an outbreak of a virulent strain of bird flu in the area and its spillover into livestock farms.

A laboratory test carried out on the carcass of a crane found in the flames of Bashan revealed that it was a bird flu virus of the especially virulent and contagious strain - H5N1. Although it is a particularly contagious disease that may endanger the birds in the area - the authorities have not yet begun to collect the carcasses of the cranes from the agricultural areas in the Hula Valley area, even many days after the death wave began. This is despite the lessons of the past and repeated requests from KKL-Junk and the Society for the Protection of Nature on the subject.​..

3rd outbreak of bird flu diagnosed in north Israel’s Jezreel Valley

The season’s third discovery of bird flu is made at Moshav Nahalal in northern Israel’s Jezreel Valley, just 600 meters (a third of a mile) from the first outbreak earlier this month on the same moshav.

The first outbreak was traced to a nine-building poultry coop containing 8,700 14-week-old turkeys in Nahalal, and the second was at Moshav Ram-On, south of the Jezreel Valley.

The disease has now broken out in two large poultry sheds at Nahalal housing 34,000 hens used to breed chickens for meat. ...
