Mumps Outbreak at Jerusalem Yeshiva

(IsraelNN.com) A mumps outbreak has hit the Or Shmuel Yeshiva at Givat Shaul in Jerusalem, according to Yisrael HaYom. Fifteen of the yeshiva's 120 students have already contracted the disease.

The first case was discovered about a month ago, and three weeks later, three more cases were diagnosed. Yeshiva sources said that some of the boys who got ill had been immunized for the disease.

The yeshiva students are aged 13 to 17.

Mumps Hits Chareidi Yeshivas in Eretz Yisrael

mumps.jpgAt least 100 talmidim of a Bnei Brak yeshiva have been sent home, diagnosed with the mumps. The yeshiva, numbering 160 talmidim, is affiliated with a chassidus. With most of the talmidim being ill, the rabbonim are considering closing the beis medrash temporarily.

25 talmidim from the Koidinov Yeshiva were sent home with mumps, and last week, talmidim of Yeshiva Ohr Shmuel in Jerusalem were sent home as well, also diagnosed with the mumps.

In line with the above report, Health Ministry officials report an increase in reported cases of mumps in Israel, 102 since September. There were 4 cases during the same period in 2008 and no reported case during the same period in 2007. Ministry officials report the main outbreak appears to be in yeshivas in the chareidi sector. Ministry officials urge parents to have their children vaccinated against the illness.

Mumps may present with painful swelling of the salivary glands. Painful testicular swelling (orchitis) and rash may also occur. The symptoms are generally not severe in children. In teenage males and men, complications such as infertility or compromised fertility are more common, although still rare in absolute terms.

Mumps Up in Israel, US in Recent Months

(IsraelNN.com) The Health Ministry announced Sunday that increased incidents of mumps have been reported in recent months. In September, 102 cases were reported in Israel, most of them in the Jerusalem area. The ministry said there was a similar increase in the United States.

The painful swelling of the saliva glands associated with the viral infection generally pass in a few days without treatment. The ministry stressed the need for the routine immunization of children at 18 months and upon entrance to the first grade as a way to protect against the illness, but said it was ready to provide vaccination in case of a local outbreak, subject to an epidemiologists checking the target population.

Mumps Continues to Spread in Yeshivas in Eretz Yisrael

mumps1.jpgIt appears that the mumps is continuing to spread in chareidi yeshivas in Eretz Yisrael, with signs of infection beginning to appear in Chevron Yeshiva. YWN-Israel reported that the illness has already infected many bochrim in Ohr Shmuel (Yerushalayim) and a Bnei Brak yeshiva, in which 100 of 160 talmidim were diagnosed.

Cases of mumps have also been detected in Yeshiva Maynei Shel Torah. In the case of the latter, as well as Yeshivas Chevron, roshei yeshiva have informed talmidim that if they detect the earliest signs of the illness, or suspect they may have it, they are to immediately leave the beis medrash and seek medical attention and/or prophylactic treatment.
