Italy, Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N2 in Lombardy Region (poultry), Update



As of August 31 2012, the National Reference Centre for Avian Influenza at the Institute for Animal Health Surveillance and Reearch (IZSVE) (Padua, Italy) confirmed the presence of a low pathogenic avian influenza virus type A (H5N2) at a turkey farm in Brescia Province, Lombardy Region, located in a densely populated poultry area (DPPA).

Following this discovery, another turkey farm ? at around 50 meters from the first one ? tested positive for the virus at September 3 2012.

Taken into account the peculiar epidemiological situation that is evolving on the Lombardy Region, the Ministry of Health imposed a restriction order on live poultry movement; in addition, the MoH called for enhanced surveillance among the poultry farms located in high risk areas, even in the neighboring Region of Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont.

Depopulation of the affected farms and destruction of the infected animals are ongoing.
