Cote d'Ivoire: An Outbreak of Cholera Claims the Lives of Two People in the Coastal Town of Adiake

A report in Nord Sud Quotidien (p. 8) noted that an outbreak of cholera has been reported in Adiake, a coastal town in eastern Cote d'Ivoire.

New cholera cases reported in south-eastern Côte d’Ivoire.
Of new cholera cases continue to be reported in health districts Adiaké Aboisso and southeast of the Côte d'Ivoire. The health district of Yopugon (Abidjan) was affected by the epidemic with a reported case. Between weeks
19 and 23, health authorities have reported 136 cases including 10 deaths.
In response, the actors Humanitarian Organization (WHO, UNICEF, MSF France, ACF, Red Cross French Red Cross and Ivorian) conducted assessments since the beginning of the epidemic. The field visits showed that latrines are almost non-existent and that the defection is outdoor widely practiced in the affected area. Many villagers use the river water while others have no access to clean water for their daily consumption needs. Practices
basic hygiene like hand washing are not followed. These factors represent a high risk for spread of the epidemic. MSF-France is involved in the health district Adiaké for the management of cases.
So far, there are no actors to ensure the management of cases in the health district Aboisso. WHO had provided drugs for the management load the first 100 cases. At present, there is shortage of drugs for care and prevention of the disease. WHO estimates needs at U.S. $ 500,000 (About 248 million FCFA).
In cooperation with INHP ​​and DHP, ACF has provided training to officers community, religious leaders, teachers and radio hosts from 12 to 14 May the practices of hand washing and disinfection of water in their villages. Of awareness messages will be broadcast in four radio stations for 15 days 3 different languages.
In cooperation with HPD, ACF will begin distribution of hygiene kits and water treatment to the most vulnerable households. Funded by UNICEF, the RCCI (a Aboisso) and ACF (a Adiake and Grand-Bassam) will conduct outreach

The cholera epidemic now affects seven districts health of South

Cholera continues to spread in C?te d'Ivoire
