Director of the Health Promotion and Protection Branch in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Kevin Harvey, states that this usually occurs during the rainy season, due to increased breeding.
According to the Ministry, laboratory tests have confirmed 180 cases of the disease since the start of the year, out of the 472 cases that were reported. A total of 167 cases of dengue were confirmed last year, from 300 suspected cases.

Dengue cases jump to 1215

The health ministry is reporting that the number of suspected cases of dengue fever has soared to 1,215 up to September 29 this year compared with 887 last year.

However, the number of cases is well below the 3,202 which were registered in 2010 when there was an outbreak.

Meanwhile, the ministry says there have been five suspected deaths with one confirmed via autopsy.

The Ministry of Health is reporting that there have been 285 new dengue cases in under a week.

Figures released by the ministry?s information department indicate that there are now 1,710 suspected cases of dengue fever in Jamaica...

Director of Emergency, Disaster Management and Special Services, Dr. Marion Bullock DuCasse is urging individuals who may be experiencing severe symptoms of dengue fever or dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) to visit the nearest health facility immediately.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever is a severe form of dengue fever which often causes death. In such cases persons may experience symptoms of dengue fever such as sudden onset of high fever with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle, bone or joint pain, skin rash and vomiting or feeling nauseous. In addition, severe and continuous stomach pains, pale, cold, clammy skin, bleeding from the nose, mouth or gums, skin bruising, frequent vomiting (with or without blood), difficulty in breathing and fainting may also be experienced in the case of DHF.

The complications associated with dengue haemorrhagic fever usually starts after the fever goes down. In severe cases, patients go into shock called dengue shock syndrome.

?If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and have any reason to believe you or a family member may have dengue haemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, you need to go to the nearest health facility immediately,? said Dr. DuCasse.

Jamaica is currently experiencing an outbreak of dengue fever and has recorded an increase in the number of cases since the start of the year, with the Ministry reporting a total of 1,710 suspected cases of dengue fever as at October 13, 2012, compared to 429 for the corresponding period last year and 2,642 for the same period in 2010 which was an outbreak year.

Individuals who wish to obtain more information on dengue may call the Ministry?s Emergency Operations Centre at 1888-663-5683 (1888 ONE LOVE), from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Fewer dengue cases in this year's outbreak - health ministry

The Health Ministry is reporting that since the Dengue Fever outbreak this year 2,198 suspected cases were recorded up to late October.

However, the ministry says this is significantly less than the 2,709 suspected cases reported over the corresponding period in the 2010, the last time the country experienced a Dengue outbreak.

Some 458 suspected cases were reported over the corresponding period last year...

Data from the Ministry of Health indicates that Jamaica is moving closer to equaling the number of dengue cases recorded during the 2010 outbreak.

The figures show that up to November 3, the ministry recorded 3,117 suspected cases of dengue fever.

This is 85 cases fewer than those recorded during the outbreak two years ago...

...Reports of suspected cases received each week have declined with 669, 466 and 250 clinically suspected cases reported for the weeks ending November 3, 10 and 17 respectively.

Dr DuCasse however explained that although the numbers appear to be trending down, it remains important for people to ensure that breeding sites are removed as the infection can only be transmitted through the bite of an infected aedes aegypti mosquito.

A total of 3,830 clinically suspected cases of dengue have been reported up to the week ending November 17.

There have been seven suspected dengue related deaths to date.

Jamaica Works On Dengue Prevention

The Ministry of Health of Jamaica says it has purchased another 28 fogging machines at a cost of five point two million dollars to help control the spread of dengue fever...

...Between January first and December fifteenth, 2012, the ministry of health recorded five thousand, three hundred and eighty four clinically suspected cases of dengue fever with seven hundred and thirty two being laboratory confirmed. There have been 10 confirmed dengue-related deaths.
