Jammu, Aug 26 (PTI) Three persons died and over 650 patients have been hospitalised following outbreak of diarrhoea in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district.

Three persons have died due to diarrhoea till now and over 88 patients have been admitted in the district hospital, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Mohammad Fareed said.

Those who have died due to diarrhoea till now included Renuka Devi of Thathri and a child Zahitona Banu, besides an elderly lady.

Fourteen patients were found to be critical and were referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.

He further said that Army's help has been sought to accommodate more and more patients coming to the hospital from various areas of the district.

82 more patients hospitalised with diarrhoea in Jammu

With 82 more people hospitalised today for diarrhoea in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, the total number of patients have swelled to over 700 with three deaths already reported.


Eighty two more patients have been admitted to district hospital at Doda today and 15 of them, whose condition was serious have been referred to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital here, a defence spokesman said.


Three persons, including a child, have died since the outbreak of diarrhoea in Doda.


District hospital is now facing shortage of staff, medicines and beds to accommodate patients, he said adding Rashtriya Rifle units present in the area swung into action and voluntarily pitched tents and provided beds for accommodating patients.

Over 1100 patients hospitalised with diarrhoea in Doda

Jammu, Aug 29 (PTI) At least 30 persons were hospitalised for diarrhoea in Doda district today, taking total number of patients affected by the disease to over 1100 with three deaths already being reported in the district till now.

30 more patients have been admitted to district hospital at Doda and 18 patients who were serious inn condition have been referred to Government Medical College hospital here for advance care, officials said.

With this, the total number of the patients affected with diarrhoea have gone upto over 1100, they said. Three persons, two women and a child, have died since outbreak of diarrhoea in Doda.

"Doda district is experienced an epidemic like situation since August 22," they said, adding Divisional Commissioner Jammu Pawan Kotwal and Director Health Services Jammu Jasbir Singh visited Doda yesterday and reviewed the situation.

Hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district witnessed chaotic scenes as diarrhoea claimed six lives in the past two days and affected over 1,200 people, officials said Sunday.

Hospitals overflowed with patients as a large number of people continued to report symptoms of diarrhoea. While the patients numbered over 1,200, the number of beds the hospitals offer is a mere 100, officials said.


Six people, including five children, died of the disease that has assumed proportions of an epidemic in the area. Several people were said to be critical.


The government rushed two teams of doctors from Jammu to Doda along with medicines to control the disease and save lives, Doda legislator Abdul Majid Wani said.


'But at the moment it is chaos. Doctors and medicines have come but the situation is far beyond control,' he said.


Jammu Health Services Director Jasbir Singh has also reached Doda, some 175 km from here, to supervise the efforts.

Hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir?s Doda district witnessed chaotic scenes as diarrhoea claimed six lives in the past two days and affected over 1,200 people, officials said on Sunday.


An 11-month-old girl died and 150 persons were hospitalised in Kupwara after an outbreak of gastroenteritis. Officials said that three patients are in a critical condition. Five more gastroenteritis patients from central Kashmir?s Budgam district have tested positive at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Medical College.

However, after Budgam and Pattan in North Kashmir?s Baramulla district, the infection has spread to other areas of the Valley. Dr Muhammad Amin Tabish, medical superintendent SKIMS prescribed safe drinking water for prevention of the diseases. ?People should only drink either filtered or boiled water,? he said.

The CPI(M) unit of J&K has asked the state government to take immediate steps to curb cases of cholera and gastroenteritis in parts of Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara and Doda districts. CPI(M) state secretary M Y Tarigami said, ?Despite tall claims of spending huge sums on providing safe drinking water, the PHE infrastructure like reservoirs and filtration plants are mostly non-existent. Curfew lifted in Valley

Authorities lifted curfew and restrictions from most parts of the Valley on Sunday. But shops, educational institutions, businesses and banks remained closed in response to the strike call given by Hurriyat Conference (G) spearheading the ongoing Quit Kashmir Movement. Special secretary to Union Home Ministry for Internal Security U K Bansal said peaceful dialogue was the only way to resolve all problems.

Jammu, Aug 30: With only 64 patients left at the district hospital Doda, the hilly Doda district has largely overcome the onslaught of diarrhea (gastroenteritis), while some fresh cases have poured in at Kaskoot medical camp and sub district hospital Banihal, official sources said on Monday.
Over 2000 people in twin districts of Ramban and Doda have fallen ill after they developed gastroenteritis symptoms, sending a panic wave in the mountainous Chenab valley belt.
Special teams of doctors were also dispatched to the far of villages of Dessa, Ganika, Bahrath and Ghath, with relatively high insistence of the epidemic, sources said
Sources said that out of 1347 patients admitted at district hospital Doda, nearly eleven hundred have been discharged after treatment, while 18 were referred for advanced treatment over this period.
One death of an elderly woman has been reported so far from the area, while over sixty patients are still undergoing treatment at district hospital Doda.
A team of etymologists have found fetal matter in the drinking water which is being attributed to the outbreak of the epidemic in the area.
The contamination of raw sources and rain fed streams due to floods triggered by recent incessant rains is also being termed as one of the reason of the infection.
Meanwhile, following the reports about the spread of diarrhea in Ramban district, the department has established a camp at Kaskoot area of Banihal Block. So far over 390 patients were brought to the camp and given necessary treatment, while around 325 patients with similar symptoms have been treated at CHC Banihal 211, sources said

One more dies of diarrhoea, toll goes to 3 in Doda

Jammu, Sep 3 (PTI) With the death of one more person, the toll due to diarrhoea has gone up to three in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, where 20 more patients have been admitted to the district hospital.

"Chuni Lal, a resident of Udhyanpur in Doda, who was hospitalised last week died of diarrhoea in the district hospital yesterday evening," Medical Superintendent of district hospital Doda, Mohammad Fareed said today.

With the death of Lal, the toll has gone upto three.

A child Zahitona Banu and an elderly person died since the outbreak of diarrhoea in Doda.

20 persons with diarrhoea symptoms have been admitted to the hospital till today, Fareed said.

As many as 2100 diarrhoea patients have been identified in several remote and mountainous areas of Doda and Ramban districts by the teams of doctors during nearly the past two weeks.

Jammu, Sep 3: Two more persons died of gastroenteritis in Doda on Friday, taking the death toll to four in past two weeks. 20 fresh patients suffering from the disease were admitted in the district hospital today.



Doctors at District Hospital Doda confirmed the death of one person. They identified the deceased as Chuni Lal of Udhyanpur Doda, who was hospitalized last week.
?He was serious and died last evening. He also had a heart problem but died of diarrhea," Medical Superintendent District Hospital Doda, Mohammad Fareed told Rising Kashmir.
However, sources said 65-years old Mohammad Ramzan Laway of Agli Gundoo also died of gastroenteritis last evening. ?Laway was not admitted in any hospital but was being treated by ISM doctors in a village medical camp,? they said.
An ISM doctor, who treated Laway, said he has died of gastroenteritis.
Earlier, a child Zahitona Banu and an elderly person died of the epidemic in Doda.
?20 fresh patients with diarrhea symptoms have been admitted in District Hospital Doda today,? Dr Fareed said.
Health Minister recently said during past two weeks as many as 2100 gastroenteritis patients have been identified in several areas of Doda and Ramban districts by the teams of doctors. ?Of these, nearly 1400 patients were identified in Doda and 750 in Ramban districts. Nearly 1800 patients were hospitalized and rest were treated in their respective areas by teams of doctors,? the officials said.
The fresh deaths have exposed the claims of government that the epidemic in Doda and other districts has been completely controlled.
Deputy Commissioner Doda, Farooq Ahmad Khan said the situation was under control as the count of gastroenteritis patients visiting the hospital was on decline.

Ramban youth dies of diarrhoea
Doctor Suspended For Alleged Negligence, Probe Ordered

Ramban, Sept 3: The district administration today suspended a doctor and ordered a magisterial enquiry into the death of a teenager, hospitalized for acute diarrhoea.

Identified as Irfan Ahmed son of Muhammad Rafeeq Bhat of Seeri in Ramban, he was admitted on Friday morning in the district hospital after he developed symptoms of acute diarrhoea. He later breathed his last on the hospital bed.

Family members of the youth alleged that the doctor on duty called the concerned physician Dr Washeed Bali several times in view of the deteriorating condition of the patient. ?However, the doctor arrived very late that lead to his death,? they alleged.

Though doctors claimed that the treatment of the teenager was started immediately after he arrived in the hospital, the locals blamed them for the negligence and demanded their immediate arrest.

As the news of the death due to diarrhoea spread, large number of people assembled in the hospital and took the body of the deceased and staged a protest demonstration on Jammu-Srinagar highway, disrupting the vehicular movement for several hours.

The protestors demanded immediate action against the doctor, who according to them was responsible for the death.

Sensing trouble Deputy Commissioner Ramban Kulbushan Mangotra immediately placed the accused doctor under suspension and ordered a probe in the matter.

Ramban, Sept 5: After Banihal and Doda, the Ramban district is under the grip of diarrhoea with 81 cases reported in the area in last five days.
Official sources said that the number of patients with symptoms of diarrhoea reporting for treatment at District Hospital Ramban has increased from the last few days.

?Around 81 cases patients reported to the OPD section of the hospital from the last five days?, sources, preferring not to be named said. They, however, added that most of the patients were stable and were discharged after medical advice.
Superintendent Ramban hospital Dr Ramdhan, however, termed the matter as routine. ?We can term it as an epidemic as such cases are routine during this season?, he said.
