SAGA (Jiji Press) ? The Saga prefectural government on Saturday confirmed an outbreak of avian influenza at a chicken farm in the town of Kohoku.

Forty chickens were found dead at the farm on Saturday morning, and a genetic test confirmed a highly pathogenic H5 bird flu virus in dead birds, according to officials of the prefectural government.

This marked the 10th avian flu case at a domestic poultry farm this winter.

SAGA ? The culling of roughly 71,000 chickens was completed over the weekend at two poultry farms in the town of Kohoku, Saga Prefecture, marking Japan?s 10th case of bird flu this winter.

The prefectural government will take all necessary measures to prevent the infection from spreading, including by sterilizing infected farms and burying the dead birds and about 770,000 eggs.

Outbreak 8 (Gifu, Yamagata-shi) ? follow up information of the previous reports On 8 February 2017, the movement restriction was lifted since 21 days had passed without any new outbreaks after control measures including stamping out had been completed. Outbreak 9 (Miyazaki, Kijo-cho) ? follow up information of the previous reports On 10 February 2017 shipment restrictions were lifted as there were not any positive results of the tests conducted after control measures including stamping out had been completed. Outbreak 10 (Saga, Kouhoku-machi) ? this report On 4 February 2017, the local veterinary service in Saga Prefecture received a notification from a domestic broiler breeders farm on an increase in the number of dead birds (40 birds on the same day). The samples from dead birds and live birds were confirmed to be influenza A virus positive by antigen-capture kits and to be subtype H5 by RT-PCR and RRT-PCR in Saga Livestock Hygiene Service Centre. Destruction of all the susceptible birds in the affected farm has been implemented. Movement and shipment restrictions are imposed on the farms within a radius of 3km and 3-10 km of the affected farm, respectively. On 6 February 2017, control measures including disinfection of the affected premises were completed and N-type was identified as N6 by NIAH.
