489 students suspected of having new-flu infections at Wakayama schools

WAKAYAMA —
A total of 489 students at Wakayama City junior high and high schools affiliated with Kinki University are suspected of being infected with the new H1N1 strain of influenza A, prefectural officials said Wednesday.
The infections—202 at the junior high and 287 at the high school as of Tuesday—appear to have been spread through a series of joint school events, such as a cultural festival last Wednesday and Thursday and a sports festival on Sunday, they said.
Both schools are scheduled to be closed from Wednesday to Friday due to the infections.
The new strain of influenza has forced a total of 2,158 schools and kindergartens in Japan to partially or entirely shut down during the week through last Saturday, the health ministry said Tuesday.
The figure, including kindergartens, primary schools, and junior and senior high schools in 46 prefectures other than Tokushima Prefecture, is about 2.8 times higher than in the previous week, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
