Bird flu from last two fall-spring seasons back in Japan, say researchers
5 hours ago

A research institute that analyzed the highly pathogenic bird flu virus detected in northern Japan in October says it is the same type as one found in the country during the previous two seasons from autumn to spring.

This season's first case was found last month in a dead wild crow in Bibai City in the prefecture of Hokkaido.

The National Agriculture and Food Research Organization says its genome analysis showed the H5N1 strain of the virus was of the same genotype as one of the viruses detected in the country in 2021 and 2022 seasons.

The organization says it has found no genetic mutations that could make the virus more contagious to mammals, and that it is unlikely that humans will be infected...

Tottori NEWS WEB

Thorough measures against avian influenza virus detected from wild bird droppings confirmed
November 21st 17:32

In response to the confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus for the first time this season in wild bird droppings collected in Tottori City on November 9th, the prefecture held a meeting on the 21st and issued an order to prevent poultry farms from being infected. We confirmed our policy to thoroughly implement measures to prevent wild bird intrusion.

The prefecture held a meeting at the prefectural office from 4:30 p.m. on the 21st, with representatives from the influenza countermeasures team and researchers from Tottori University in attendance.
According to the prefecture, highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus was confirmed in wild bird feces collected by Tottori University from Nikko Pond in Ketaka-cho, Tottori City on November 9th.
This is the first time this season that a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus has been confirmed in the prefecture.
On the 21st, the prefecture conducted on-site inspections of three poultry farms within 10 kilometers of the pond where the virus was found, and conducted telephone interviews with 75 other poultry farms in the prefecture. So far, no abnormalities have been confirmed.
Governor Hirai, who attended the meeting online, said, ``We must mobilize all our efforts to prevent the spread of infection within poultry farms like last year.'' In addition to strengthening wild bird surveillance as a prefecture, They confirmed that they will take thorough measures to prevent infection, including distributing approximately 1,600 bags of slaked lime for disinfection and draining water from reservoirs near poultry farms.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus detected in Izumi City, 10th case of this season
December 1st 19:36

A highly pathogenic avian influenza virus was detected in a dead wild bird recovered in Izumi City late last month.

This is the 10th case of avian influenza virus detected in the prefecture this season.

According to the prefecture, on the 28th of last month, three long-naved cranes were found dead in the eastern reclamation area of Izumi City.

Kagoshima University conducted a genetic test on the 1st and detected a highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus with a high mortality rate.

In the prefecture, avian influenza virus was detected for the first time this season in water collected from a wild bird roost in Izumi City on the 10th of last month, making this the 10th case.

This is also the sixth case detected in birds.

The Ministry of the Environment will continue to carry out monitoring in the "priority areas for wild bird monitoring" that have already been established.

The prefecture also urges people to contact the prefecture or municipality immediately if they find a dead wild bird.

Furthermore, as avian influenza virus has been confirmed at poultry farms in Saga Prefecture and elsewhere, we are calling on poultry farmers in the prefecture to take thorough measures.

TOKYO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A highly pathogenic avian influenza virus of the H5 subtype has been detected in a wild bird found in central Tokyo, marking the first instance of avian influenza infection in a wild bird during the current avian flu season in the city, according to local authorities.

The body of a buzzard, or Buteo japonicus, was discovered in the central Chiyoda Ward of Tokyo last Tuesday, and the preliminary test results conducted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government were negative, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Bureau.

Subsequent genetic testing by the National Institute for Environmental Studies, however, confirmed that the buzzard was indeed infected with the highly pathogenic H5 subtype of avian influenza, information released by the bureau on Monday showed...

Virus isolation tests were carried out at Kyoto Sangyo University on feces collected on Tuesday, December 12, 2020 in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture, and a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus was detected on Saturday, December 16, 2020. There was a report that (H5N1 subtype) was detected. This case is the first confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus associated with wild birds in Shiga Prefecture this season (66th case in Japan). In response to this report, we will designate the area within 10 km around the collection point as a priority area for wild bird monitoring and strengthen wild bird monitoring.

Yonehara: Bird flu spread from wild bird feces in 10km radius monitoring area

December 18th 18:07

This month (December), a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus was detected in wild duck feces collected in Maibara City, and Shiga Prefecture has strengthened wild bird surveillance.

According to Shiga Prefecture, this is the first time this season that avian influenza virus infection has been confirmed in the prefecture.

According to Shiga Prefecture, on the 12th of this month, officials from Kyoto Sangyo University tested wild duck feces collected in Maibara City, and one of the 22 samples tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 subtype. Avian influenza virus was detected.

In response to this, on the 16th, the Ministry of the Environment designated a 10km radius from the fecal collection point as a ``wild bird monitoring priority area.''

This is the first time this season that avian influenza virus infection has been confirmed in Shiga Prefecture.
The prefectural government held a countermeasures meeting at the prefectural office on the afternoon of the 18th, and officials reported that they were strengthening surveillance in the "priority wild bird monitoring areas."

In addition, the attendees confirmed that they would call on poultry farms and other facilities to check that there are no gaps in the nets installed to prevent wild birds from entering, and to thoroughly disinfect their nets.

According to the prefecture, there are no facilities with more than 100 chickens or ducks in the designated ``wild bird monitoring areas.''

The prefecture urges people to never touch dead wild birds and to contact the prefecture if they see them.
