Suspected case of highly pathogenic bird flu found on Miyazaki farm

MIYAZAKI ? The Miyazaki Prefectural Government on Sunday night reported a suspected highly pathogenic bird flu case in the city of Miyazaki, the prefectural capital.

Chickens at a poultry farm in the city tested positive for avian influenza in a simple examination conducted after their successive deaths, the prefectural government said.

It has started a genetic test and called on the farm to isolate chickens and nearby farms not to move chickens.

The farm raises some 42,000 fowl. If a highly pathogenic bird flu virus is found, all the chickens will be slaughtered, and chickens within a radius of 3 km will be prohibited from being moved and shipments of those in other areas within 10 km will be banned.

On Dec. 16, highly pathogenic bird flu was confirmed at a poultry farm in the city of Nobeoka, also in Miyazaki Prefecture, where about 4,000 chickens were killed.

A prefectural government official said it is uncertain whether the latest case is linked to the Nobeoka one.

On 28 December 2014, the local veterinary service in Miyazaki Prefecture received a notification from a broiler farm on an increase in the number of dead birds in one of four houses (30 birds on 28 December). The samples were sent to the laboratory of local veterinary service centre (Miyazaki Livestock Hygiene Centre). The samples from dead birds were confirmed to be influenza A virus positive by antigen-capture kits. On the same day, the centre started RT-PCR test and confirmed that the subtype was H5. Stamping-out policy was applied to the affected farm. Destruction of all the susceptible birds in the affected farm (approx. 42,000 birds) was completed in the morning of 29 December 2014. Movement restrictions are imposed on the farms within the radius of 3km of the affected farm. Shipment restrictions are imposed on the farms within the radius of 3-10km of the affected farm.
