Health ministry updates manual for dengue fever

The health ministry has revised its manual for dengue fever after the first domestic outbreak of the tropical disease in 70 years revealed it was outdated.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said Friday the manual was updated to provide responses for dengue infections in parks and residential areas. It now calls for eliminating mosquitoes within a radius of 100 meters from areas deemed infected versus 50 meters in the old manual.

The ministry said a recent mosquito extermination program in Shinjuku Chuo Park in Tokyo was conducted using the revised manual. The park is close to Yoyogi Park, where most of the recent dengue infections originated.

The ministry also said the tally of infections stands at 115, including a teenage girl in Akita Prefecture and 10 others recently infected.

The infection path for the Akita girl, whose infection was confirmed on Thursday, is still under investigation because she visited China before going to Yoyogi Park, where the virus is being propagated via mosquito bites.

The other 10, whose infections were confirmed on Friday, are also believed to have contracted the disease in Yoyogi Park, although one had also visited Shinjuku Chuo Park.

The cases were found in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, with the exception of a man in Kochi Prefecture, the first known case there.

The total topped 100 on Thursday, only half a month after the first dengue infection was confirmed on Aug. 27.

A woman in her 20s from Saitama Prefecture is thought to have contracted the dengue virus after being bitten by a mosquito at Tokyo?s Ueno Park, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said Friday.

It said the park, home to Ueno Zoo and several major art and science museums, will remain open to the public.

Meanwhile, the Environment Ministry reported Friday that the dengue virus had been found in a mosquito caught in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. However, no human infection has been confirmed among visitors.

The garden, near JR Shinjuku Station, has been closed since early this month due to its proximity to Yoyogi Park, where virus-carrying mosquitoes were first found.

The health ministry says more than 140 people have been diagnosed with the virus so far, many of whom paid a visit to Yoyogi Park since August...

The first case of dengue fever was reported on Aug. 27. As of Friday, the number had increased to 141 people in 17 prefectures ? not one of whom had traveled abroad. If the asymptotic or unreported cases are included, it?s quite possible that figure may be two or threefold.

This deservedly made news for being the first outbreak in Japan since 1942-44 ? a time when thousands of Japanese soldiers had been dispatched to the tropics.

According to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, reported cases of dengue fever in Japan numbered 402 in 2013, but all were believed to have been contracted abroad.

Dengue fever case suspected in Tokyo?s Sumida Ward

The health ministry says that a case of dengue fever is now suspected in Tokyo?s Sumida Ward, relatively far from the suspected epicenter of a recent outbreak of the disease.

A woman in her 20s from Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, was bitten by a mosquito at Sumida Park on the afternoon of Sept. 14, the ministry said.

She began to show symptoms of the mosquito-borne tropical disease on Sept. 19 and remains hospitalized. She has not traveled overseas recently, nor visited Yoyogi Park or other places in Tokyo where other infections happened.

Yoyogi Park reopens after 57-day closure due to dengue fever

The Tokyo metropolitan government on Friday reopened all of Yoyogi Park, 57 days after dengue-carrying mosquitoes were found there.

Parts of the park had been off limits to the public as health workers sprayed pesticide to try to kill off the insect colony.
