Fukuoka Pref. woman dies of tick-borne disease

KURUME, Fukuoka -- An elderly resident of Ukiha, Fukuoka Prefecture, died of an infectious disease transmitted by ixodid ticks, the public health center here announced on Aug. 16.
According to the center, the woman in her 80s was bitten on the leg by a tick while doing farm work on Aug. 1, and was seen by a doctor for symptoms including fever and diarrhea. Her condition worsened and she was hospitalized in Kurume, but passed away on Aug. 13. A genetic test confirmed two days later that she was infected with "severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS)...
