Toshiba, Hitachi send engineers to stricken nuclear plant
TOKYO | Tue Mar 22, 2011 11:24am EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - Electronics giants Toshiba and Hitachi said on Tuesday they had dispatched hundreds of staff to provide support at Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and to carry out checks at the neighboring Daini plant....

Hopefully getting the power connected is a turning point. I'm guessing that this is why there was a huge influx of support staff on the 22nd.

Japan Quietly Evacuating a Wider Radius From Reactors

By DAVID JOLLY, HIROKO TABUCHI and KEITH BRADSHER
Published: March 25, 2011

TOKYO — Japanese officials on Friday began quietly encouraging people to evacuate a larger swath of territory around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, a sign that they hold little hope that the crippled facility will soon be brought under control.

The authorities said they would now assist people who want to leave the area from 12 to 19 miles outside the crippled plant and said they were now encouraging “voluntary evacuation” from the area. Those people had been advised March 15 to remain indoors, while those within a 12-mile radius of the plant had been ordered to evacuate.

The United States has recommended that its citizens stay at least 50 miles away from the plant.

Challenge to remove water from reactors

Tokyo Electric Power Company is considering ways to remove water from the quake-hit nuclear plant where three workers have been exposed to high levels of radiation.
The workers waded into water that contained 10,000 times the radiation of normal levels. This took place in the basement of the turbine building of the Number 3 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on Thursday. They were working to install power cables....

Fresh water injected into No. 2 reactor

Workers at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are now pumping fresh water instead of seawater into the No. 2 reactor.
The measure was taken to prevent salt from building up inside the reactor and affecting its cooling capability. Seawater was used to cool reactors and spent fuel storage pools at the plant as an emergency measure following the tsunami....
