Size of Japan's quake surprises seismologists

The 8.9 magnitude earthquake is among the top 10 ever recorded and occurred on an irregular fault line where a smaller temblor would be expected.

The magnitude 8.9 earthquake that struck Friday off the coast of Japan "is going to be among the top 10 earthquakes recorded since we have had seismographs," said seismologist Susan Hough of the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena. "It's bigger than any known historic earthquake in Japan, and bigger than expectations for that area."

Geologists had expected the portion of the Ring of Fire that produced this quake to yield a temblor on the order of magnitude 8 or perhaps 8.5, she said. "Something as big as an 8.9 is a bit of a surprise."

A quake that big usually requires a long, relatively straight fault line that can rupture, such as those found in Peru and along the eastern coast of South America. Thursday's quake occurred in the Japan Trench, where the Pacific tectonic plate slides under the Japan plate.

Scientists did not expect such a big quake in the area because the plate boundary is not straight, but is fairly irregular. According to Lucile Jones of the U.S. Geological Survey, producing a quake of that size would require rupturing a zone at least 300 miles long.

The region had a magnitude 7.2 temblor Wednesday in almost exactly the same area. Typically, with any large earthquake, there is about a 5% chance that such a quake is a precursor of a larger quake. This appears to have been that 1-in-20 chance.

There have been at least two aftershocks of magnitude 7 or greater, and researchers expect more.

The quake was a "perfect storm for tsunami generation," Hough said ? it was large in magnitude and very shallow. The quake was so close to land, about 80 miles offshore, that people on shore really had no warning that a 15-foot wave was imminent....

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan -- A massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck northeast Japan on Friday, shaking buildings across the country, setting dozens of fires in the Tokyo region, and prompting a tsunami warning from New Zealand to the west coast of the United States.

Aftershocks continued to strike the Tokyo area for hours, in what is being called the largest earthquake since a 9.0-magnitude quake struck the Banda Aceh area of Indonesia on Dec. 26, 2004, causing a massive tsunami that killed about 250,000 people in 14 countries.

I'm hearing on the radio that there are at least 88.000 people missing according to the official media.

TOKYO ? A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes on record slammed Japan's eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away ships, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control.
Hours later, the tsunami hit Hawaii but did not cause major damage. Warnings blanketed the Pacific, putting areas on alert as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West coast. In northeastern Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant was evacuated after the reactor's cooling system failed.
Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicenter. Another 137 were confirmed killed, with 531 people missing. Police also said 627 people were injured.
The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed for hours by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0.
Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter. A large section of Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people in Miyagi, burned furiously into the night with no apparent hope of being extinguished, public broadcaster NHK said.
"The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan," Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference.

Japan earthquake becomes fifth-strongest on record

The strongest quake on record occurred in Chile in 1960 and measured magnitude 9.5. The devastating quake in Japan supplants the 2010 Chile quake, which at 8.8 was fifth-strongest. The deadliest quake in history is believed to have been an 8.0 temblor in Shaanxi, China, in 1556, in which 830,000 are believed to have died.

World stunned by Japan quake but little rapid action

LONDON (Reuters) - The U.S. air force delivered emergency coolant to an earthquake-hit nuclear power station in Japan Friday but initial world reaction to the massive tremor and tsunami was otherwise marked by stunned inaction.

"The world is shocked and saddened by the images coming out of Japan this morning," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.
"We will do anything and everything we can."

But as leaders across the globe reacted and the tsunami wave roared across the Pacific, damaged airports in Japan and uncertainty about the level of assistance required by a wealthy nation well used to earthquakes meant there was little immediate move to bring in resources from outside.

Among instant, critical help was the delivery of coolant to a damaged nuclear plant. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. air force based in Japan had transported it.
