AOMORI/NIIGATA ? A highly contagious avian flu outbreak has been confirmed at poultry farms in Niigata and Aomori prefectures, forcing local governments to cull more than 300,000 chickens and ducks on Tuesday.The cases are the first of a highly pathogenic H5 strain of the virus in domestic poultry since January 2015 when it was detected in Okayama and Saga prefectures.

South Korea experienced an outbreak of bird flu earlier this month, possibly transmitted by migratory birds. Experts warned that the outbreak could spread nationwide as infected wild birds have been found in many parts of the country.

Tests have confirmed the presence of the H5 strain at the poultry farm in the village of Sekikawa, Niigata Prefecture, while Aomori Prefecture is trying to confirm whether the virus at a local duck farm is also H5.

A local official found about 40 dead chickens at the Niigata farm Monday. Five of the birds tested positive. The Niigata Prefectural Government began culling the estimated 310,000 chickens at the farm.

In Aomori, where 10 ducks were found dead Monday, the prefectural government is culling about 16,500 birds at a farm where ducks tested positive for the H5 bird flu strain in preliminary testing.

The samples will undergo further analysis as officials suspect the virus is likely to be highly pathogenic.

The samples were sent to the laboratory of local veterinary service (Aomori Livestock Hygiene Service Centre) and the samples from dead birds were confirmed to be influenza A virus positive by antigen-capture kits. On the same day, the Centre started RT-PCR and RRT-PCR tests and confirmed that the subtype was H5. Outbreak 2 (Niigata): On 28 November 2016, the local veterinary service in Niigata Prefecture received a notification from a domestic hen farm on an increase in the number of dead birds (60 birds on the same day). The samples were sent to the laboratory of local veterinary service (Niigata Livestock Hygiene Service Centre) and the samples from dead birds were confirmed to be influenza A virus positive by antigen-capture kits. Another outbreak of bird flu is suspected to have been discovered at a Niigata Prefecture farm, the local government said Wednesday, following the recent discovery of avian flu in a separate area in the prefecture.

In the latest case, some 100 chickens died between Tuesday and Wednesday morning at a farm in Joetsu on the Sea of Japan coast, and six of those birds tested positive after preliminary analysis, it said.

The prefectural government is also in the process of culling approximately 310,000 chickens at a poultry farm in Sekikawa after announcing Tuesday that tests have confirmed the presence of the highly virulent H5 strain of virus.

The move signals that Japan may see a spread in the avian influenza, which has also affected ducks on a farm in Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Japan. Some 18,000 ducks there have already been culled.

Farm minister Yuji Yamamoto called for further steps to prevent the bird flu from spreading, saying in a government meeting Wednesday that “the initial response is important.”

The Niigata prefectural government said further tests have been carried out to check whether the chickens on the farm in Joetsu were infected by the highly pathogenic bird flu virus. Some 230,000 chickens are kept on the farm at any one time.

These are the first cases of infection with the virus in domestic poultry since January 2015 when it was detected in Okayama and Saga prefectures.

Fourth outbreak of avian flu is confirmed in northern Japan

AOMORI &#150; An outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu has been confirmed at another duck farm in the city of Aomori, the prefectural government said Friday.
The Aomori Prefectural Government started work to cull all the 4,800 ducks at the farm.


Five ducks were found dead on Friday morning. A simple test was conducted on four of the birds, and all of them tested positive for avian flu.

On Monday, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian flu was confirmed at a separate duck farm in the city of Aomori.

The two duck farms are 350 meters away from each other and are owned by the same company, which runs four more poultry farms in Aomori Prefecture. The same feed is used at the two affected farms.

Bird flu infections now have been confirmed at four poultry farms in Japan. The other two cases happened at chicken farms in the village of Sekikawa and the city of Joetsu, both in the central prefecture of Niigata.

In the latest case at the Aomori farm, a highly pathogenic H5 flu virus was detected in the dead ducks, as was the case at the three other farms.

<Avian flu> Detection also from snowy owl

The samples from dead birds were confirmed to be influenza A virus positive by antigen-capture kits and to be subtype H5 by RT-PCR and RRT-PCR in Niigata Livestock Hygiene Service Centre. Destruction of all the susceptible birds in the affected farm has been completed on 4 December 2016. Movement and shipment restrictions are imposed on the farms within a radius of 3km and within a radius of 3-10km of the affected farm, respectively. The N-type was identified as N6 by the NIAH on 2 December 2016. Outbreak 4 (Aomori, 2nd case) - this report: On 2 December 2016, the local veterinary service centre in Aomori Prefecture received a notification about an increase of the number of dead birds (5 birds on the day) from a domestic ducks farm, which was related epidemiologically to the farm already notified (as in Outbreak 1).
