Measles epidemic starting to ease

The number of people contracting measles has passed its peak in Japan, with patients in the week to June 17 declining from the previous week, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases reported Tuesday.
"The epidemic basically appears to have passed its peak," an institute official said.
According to reports from about 450 medical institutions nationwide, the number of measles patients aged 15 and older in the week came to 47 in 20 prefectures, declining for the third consecutive week and down from the 50 patients reported in the previous week.
Tokyo saw the largest number of patients, at 16, followed by Kanagawa Prefecture's seven, Miyagi's five, and two each in Akita and Saitama.
Patients 14 and younger were reported at 175, far below the 204 marked the previous week, the institute said. The cumulative number of measles patients this year through June 17 reached 573, the highest figure since 2000.
