Jhapa on high alert as swine flu fear surges

JHAPA: Health officials in this eastern district have sounded alert after neighbouring districts reported swine flu cases.
The move came after swine flu was confirmed in 17 individuals?seven from Saptari, six from Dharan and two each from Ilam and Sunsari.
Mahendra Chaudhary, officer at the District Public Health Office (DPHO), said the office had formed a Rapid Response Team and deploy it soon in infected areas to control the disease.
According to Chaudhary, a DPHO team and another team under Ram Kumar Mahato from the Epidemiology and Communicable Disease Control Division, Eastern Regional Directorate, have performed check-ups on suspected swine flu patients at rehabilitation homes in Jhapa. He said 223 suspected patients had undergone check-up, while the salilva and mucus of eight people had been sent to the Nepal Public Health Laboratory for sample examination.
He went on to inform that the report of the sample test would be available within three days.
Symptoms, suggestions
JHAPA: The patients, according to Chaudhary, fall suddenly, complain of throat pain and headache, and their body temperature is above 38 degrees celsius. Wearing masks, avoiding handshakes and maintaining distance of one metre while communicating are some of the safeguards. Chaudhary advises regular health check up once the symptoms of influenza appear.
