Abstract

Background: Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, digital contact tracing apps (CTAs) have become prevalent worldwide in a coordinated effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus. However, their uptake has been low and slow due to their minimalist design and lack of motivational affordances.
Objective: The objective of this article is to present a protocol for a systematic review of the main factors (including facilitators and barriers) that influence the adoption of CTAs.
Methods: We searched seven databases (Scopus, CINAHL, PubMed (MEDLINE), IEEE Xplore Digital Library, ACM Digital Library, Web of Science, and Google Scholar). Three authors will be involved in removing the duplicates, screening and selection of the relevant articles using the PRISMA-P protocol.
Results: Altogether, we retrieved 777 articles from the seven databases. We hope to tabulate and graph the main findings and write the systematic review by the end of June 2021. We expect to uncover facilitators and/or barriers related to app utility, data security, ease of use, and persuasive design to be important to CTA adoption.
Conclusions: The findings of the systematic review will help researchers uncover the gaps in CTA adoption, and decision-makers and designers focus on the principal adoption factors necessary to create better and more effective CTAs.
