KANPUR: The `mystery' fever had claimed 234 lives, mostly minors, in Ramabai Nagar so far. According to district hospital sources, 14 deaths due to fever were reported on Friday.

The situation is turning worse and virtually taking an epidemic form. Joint director, health, SC Saxena had visited Ramabai Nagar to take stock of the situation. According to district officials, several health teams, which are camping in affected villages, are providing medical assistance. Stress is being laid on maintaining hygiene.


"The situation is indeed grim and there were 14 deaths on Friday. Of them, three minors died in Umarpur village at Sikandara, two in Akbarpur besides one death each in Derapur, Ahrauli Sheikh, Chaurah, Parherapur, Kailashnath Purwa, Madaiyaa, Khasbara, Ratapur and Shivajinagar villages. Thirty four more cases of malaria were identified and admitted at the district hospital," said Arvind Sachan, district nodal officer, epidemic.

The locals alleged that health department and district officials failed to take appropriate and preventive steps to contain the situation.

With too many deaths reported from the district, the health department had swung into action. Belated but desperate attempts are being made to provide succour to the masses.

A medical team was sent to four blocks of Malasa, one more team comprising a child specialist is conducting awareness drive in the affected villages.

At least 37 of the first 220 deaths have now been given confirmed diagnoses. Given the previous symptoms, encephalitis viruses should now be tested for, and the mention of pain in the stomach might also suggest waterborne gastrointestinal disease.

I now agree with RoRo that this is a compound outbreak.

Seventeen out a total of 220 deaths in a dozen villages of UP's Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar were caused by dengue, and malaria killed 20. But the remaining 183 fell prey to a mysterious viral infection.

These are the grim findings of the state's health department. While it took about 30 days for doctors to finally reach the conclusion, officials made it clear that diagnosing the disease which claimed the maximum lives was not possible for them.

Seven of the deaths have taken place in the past 24 hours, and 248 patients are still receiving treatment in the district government hospital.

Besides, over 200 patients are suffering from the fever in various villages of what was earlier referred to as Kanpur Rural.

"The common symptoms are severe pain in the stomach and high fever, followed by death.

The doctors told us that there is no facility for carrying out tests of blood or serum samples. So, they would treat the patients for normal viral fever," Yogesh Sachan, the father of a 16- yearold girl who died of the mysterious fever on Wednesday night, said.

Acting chief medical officer Dr Lajja Ram said: "The problem is that several doctors and paramedical staff were found absent from primary health centres and sub-centres." He also confessed that only Kanpur Medical College had the facilities to diagnose viral diseases.

Dr V. S. Nigam, officiating director of communicable diseases, said: "We have procured some test kits and sent doctors to the villages. There are enough medicines in the hospitals and patients can take them free of cost," he claimed.

But a pharmacist at the Chaubeypur health centre demanded money from poor patients on Friday, leading to an ugly showdown between him and the local doctor, Manish Yadav.

"The pharmacist demand money from poor patients. But whenever inquiry takes place, the officers punish us", fumed Dr Yadav.

KANPUR: A family of insect having a lifespan of about two weeks have virtually swarmed the industrial city. From malaria to dengue and chikangunya, the increasing population of female mosquitoes has wrecked havoc on the immune system of the masses.

The denizens have been rendered even more vulnerable by the various potential mosquito breeding grounds in almost all parts of the city. As per the information provided by the urban malaria department, different species of malaria and dengue are found in dense areas of the city.

With more than 50 patients confirmed dengue positive in the past three weeks, an alarm has been sounded. The concerning body has identified areas from where a majority of the cases are being reported. "There are three different species of 'Aedes' mosquito that is causing dengue. They are aegyptis, vittatus and albopictus. The laboratory reports have revealed that agypti and albopictus are the main vectors of dengue," said urban malaria officer AK Singh.

And now a confirmed JE case in Lucknow. Lucknow is about 150 miles due west of the encephalitis hotbed Gorakhpur, and less than 50 miles Northeast of Kanpur.

Lucknow, Oct 10 (PTI) Three deaths have been reported from here in past 24 hours due to dengue and Japanese encephalitis, official sources said today.

Monu Prasad (20) and Rupanti (14) died of dengue, while one Sufian (11) died of Japanese encephalitis yesterday, health department officials said.

Over two dozen patients suffering from dengue have been admitted to different hospitals in the city, they said.

Meanwhile, UP Health Minister Anant Kumar Mishra has directed the health department to conduct fogging with the help of the municipal corporation.

Very few of the diseases mentioned so far in this thread as possible suspects are bacterial, so antibiotics might not be much help. Other drugs such as anti-malarials might be, however.

"My one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Supriya has died in the absence of proper treatment. My neighbour's children-- Lalit (8) and Neelu (10)-- also died due to the same disease on Sunday," said Shiv Pyari, the mother of Supriya who was found in an inconsolable state outside the district hospital.

"Nobody is taking care of us as we are poor. Where can we get the money to avail better treatment in private hospital?" lamented Rakesh of Sikandara village. His relative Lakshmi (55) died on Sunday.

Similarly, four deaths were reported from Rajpur village on Sunday-- viz Feroz (28), Simran (7) Munnu (1) and Isa (7). There are around 12 reeling from the fever in the same village.

5 confirmed H1N1 fatalities from Uttar Pradesh reported for the week ending October 10, but the number of confirmed cases increased by only 1. Since August 29 there have been 15 confirmed H1N1 fatalities from 162 confirmed cases. Given the state of UP's healthcare there are probably many more unconfirmed fatalities in the State. With the cfr of H1N1 (maybe 0.05%), that suggests 10s of thousands of people in the State are suffering from H1N1 - making it a significant part of any "mystery fever" outbreak.

The only two things that seem to have been confirmed in Ramabai Nagar so far are malaria and dengue. Everything else is just suspect at this point, including H1N1, typhoid, encephalitis, gastro, etc. I am a little hesitant to suspect much H1N1 because this happened in 2006 and 2008, when there was no H1N1.

Uttar Pradesh is the most populous State in India at 190,000,000. If it were a country, it would be the sixth most populous in the world.

Ramabai Nagar district has a population of over 1.5 million and is part of Kanpur district (pop 4.2 million).

The death toll has mounted to about 300 in Kanpur Dehat due to mysterious fever since last one month.



The fever took its root in the state and it spreaded itself in Jaunpur, Lucknow and Shamli, the sources said.



Around 40 girls in a college in Jaunpur were affected by the fever last week and in Kanpur it became an epidemic.



The new CMO has not been appointed yet after the dismissal of the CMO and the health department is unable to detect the disease.


The death toll is rising day by day, but the government is sleeping yet.

Here is an earlier article on the "outbreak" in a school at Jaunpur. No clue whether this is related to the outbreak at Ramabai Nagar (especially since this outbreak has 40 cases with no reported fatalitites, whereas the impression is that the outbreak at Ramabai Nagar is of a high CFR), but this sounds like possible H1N1.

Jaunpur is apparently nearly 100 miles from either Lucknow or Kanpur, and Shamli (from the above post) is even further away. The only place undiagnosed fatalities seem to be piling up is in Kanpur Dehat/Ramabai Nagar.

These students, residential Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya have of Jaunpur.

ascertain the facts and figures of human casualties. It has been learnt

The disease started from Ahrauli Sheikh village in Amraudha block and
within a month spread to 48 villages, housing 3000 families. It was also
learnt that the infants who fell victim to the disease were suffering from
acute malnutrition. "The infants were suffering from malnutrition and that
made some of them vulnerable to the killer virus," said district nodal
officer (epidemic) Arvind Sachan.

Baghpat is about 10 miles north of Delhi. The article suggests 68 deaths of which 80% are suspected dengue, and the rest "brain death" (encephalitis?) and other viral fevers.

Ghaziabad, Oct 14 (PTI) Three persons have died due to dengue in the district, officials said here.

22-year-old Rahul, suffering from fever for past four days, died due to dengue yesterday in village Duhai, they said.

Another person 45-year-old Ombir, resident of village Salemabad, also died of fever in a local hospital here.

A child Rohit died in industrial area of Sahibabad due to dengue, they said.

Meanwhile, five more cases of the vector-borne disease were reported in the district.

This new count of 292 is 31 more than the previous count of 261 four days ago. Since 6 of the deaths are reported today, that means 25 have occurred over the past 3 days, for an average of 8.3 per day.

KANPUR: Six more persons died of `mystery' fever in Ramabai Nagar district on Friday, taking the toll to 292 in the past few days. Rani Devi (25) and Soni (3) of Apauna village in Rasoolabad block, Muniya (40) of Haramau village in Bhognipur block, Parshuram (50) of Bibiyapur Amraudha, Alsafa (10) of Mungisapur and Basant (40) of Rajpur village succumbed to the fever, a district official said.

Six more persons have died of `mystery' fever marked by high inflammation in Ramabainagar district, taking the toll to 292 in the past few days.
