The India weekly outbreak thread http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158469 has tracked multiple outbreaks of Cholera in Karnataka this year; Chikkaballapur, Gulburga and Chitradurga have reported outbreaks.

The first fatalities were reported last week;

Cholera claims three lives in Hassan

Hassan: Three persons died of cholera in the last three days at Malapana Koplu in Belur taluk and over 50 have been hospitalised.

District Health Officer Dr. Bheeshmachar told The Hindu that laboratory tests had confirmed that the deaths were due to cholera. The department had taken steps to check spread of the disease, he added.

The dead are Shruthi (18), Mallamma (85) and Basavalinga Gowda (75). As many as 54 people are undergoing treatment at Medical College hospital in Hassan.

A 30-year-old painter was diagnosed with cholera at the Victoria Hospital on Wednesday and the BBMP is now scrambling to ensure measures are in place to prevent an outbreak.

Shabeer Ahmed, a resident of Goripalya, tested positive for the disease and is now being treated at Victoria Hospital. Doctors say his condition is stable. Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Victoria Hospital superintendent Dr B G Tilak said: ?We conducted the test on him and was positive. He received treatment at the right time and his condition is stable. This is the first case of cholera in three years.?

Suspected cholera: 30 take ill

Nearly 30 persons took ill at Dyavappahalli village in the taluk on Friday due to suspected cholera.


In morning, around 15 persons complained of vomiting and diarrhoea and they were immediately shifted to Government hospital for treatment. With more cases coming to light, officials of the Department of Health became alert and started a temporary treatment centre at the local Anganwadi Centre.

While some are still undergoing treatment, the others were discharged after treatment. The villagers became panic to see the suffering of the patients.

It is suspected that mixing of sewage water with drinking water may the reason for outbreak of gastroenteritis. ?Since we have already started treatment there may not be more fresh cases. The blood samples of patients and drinking water sample are collected and sent for the laboratory test?, said Dr B Manjunath.

Two cases of cholera detected at Dyavappanahalli in Belur

Health officials say the condition of Thimme Gowda and Nanjamma is serious

At least one person from each family in the village of 650 people shows cholera symptoms

Hassan: Two cases of cholera have been detected at Dyavappanahalli in Belur taluk in the district on Saturday.

On Thursday (April 28, 2011), as many as 12 people of the village were hospitalised after they complained of vomiting and diarrhoea soon after consuming contaminated water.

On Friday, the district health officials sent samples of drinking water and samples of stool of patients for laboratory tests. The results of the tests that arrived on Saturday indicated that two patients are suffering from cholera.

Hospital reports 293 cases of gastroenteritis in a month
Water-borne diseases surge in the City
Bangalore, May 3, DHNS:

Water contamination and poor hygiene have led to the increase in incidents of gastroenteritis (GE) and diarrhoea in the City. Doctors from various hospitals said cases had risen in the last 15 days along with a few confirmed cases of cholera.


As many as 293 cases of GE were reported from Isolation Hospital last month, with the male and female ward being nearly full even on Tuesday. ?We received 17 cases of GE on Monday. We are receiving at least 15-20 cases per day for the last 10 days,? said a staff.

The hospital had four positive cases of cholera last month, with three being diagnosed in the last week. Doctors at Victoria Hospital said there had been a substantial increase in GE cases over the last three months. The hospital is receiving three to four persons with GE symptoms on any single day. As for cholera, the hospital treated one patient, who was referred from Isolation Hospital a fortnight ago.

?The patient, who was from Goripalya, was misdiagnosed and our doctors diagnosed him for cholera and treated him,? said Medical Superintendent Dr B G Tilak.

All over the State, 1,592 patients have been identified with GE symptoms and eight deaths have been reported.
