Swine flu deaths on the decline
Rashmi Menon, Bangalore, July 1, DHNS:

4 deaths in the State this year; low figure seen as increase in immunity


Deaths reported in the State due to H1N1 have declined steadily over the last three years.

From registering 94 deaths in 2009 and 42 in 2010 in Bangalore urban district (including BBMP area) alone, the numbers have drastically come down to one death till May this year

The four deaths, which occurred this year were one each in Bangalore, Davangere, Shimoga and Tumkur.

The department is still receiving H1N1 cases - 846 samples were tested till May this year, of which 29 tested positive.

Bangalore: Swine Flu Cases Coming to Fore


Bangalore, Jul 6: Three H1N1 cases were reported from Sagar in Shimoga district in the recent past. While one of these three women died a couple of days back, two others are recovering.

In the entire state, 42 confirmed swine flu cases were reported from the state since January till now. 27 of the cases pertain to the city.

A pregnant woman from the city had been to Sagar for delivery. After her flu symptoms refused to subside, she was referred to Manipal Hospital by the private nursing home where she was treated. At Manipal, she was diagnosed with swine flu. A woman, who was taking care of the first woman, also was found to have contracted the disease. She is also being treated at Manipal.

A woman from Atawadi in Sagar taluk, who used to frequent Manipal Hospital relating to complications caused by kidney failure, also was tested H1N1 positive. Although the hospital authorities had suggested her to undergo dialysis, she did not opt for the treatment because of the family?s poor condition. She died while coming back home.

The health department has confirmed that it has not been taking chances, even though the impact of swine flu is less this year. It said it has been strengthening the laboratories and testing procedures across the state, and keeping proper stock of Tamiflu tablets. The officials of the department have assured that there is no need to be panicky about this disease.

SHIMOGA: A woman died of H1N1 on Monday and two more cases were reported in Sagar town. Confirming this with�Express, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr Chennabasappa said a woman aged 48 years from Aatavadi village of Sagar taluk was suffering from kidney problem and went for treatment to Manipal.

It was confirmed in Manipal Hospital, where she died due to renal failure on Monday evening, that she had� H1N1.

Two women of Sagar town too are suffering from H1N1. One pregnant woman, 24, afflicted with H1N1, was rushed to Manipal where she delivered a child and both mother and child are in good health.

She is responding well to treatment, he added.

Another woman aged 26 years, being treated at a private hospital in Sagar is also responding to the treatment. Dr Chennabasappa said the department has taken several measures to check the spurt of H1N1 in the taluk. People suffering from fever with symptoms of H1N1 were treated with Tamiflu tablets.

Udupi: Swine Flu Endemic Scare ? District Loses Two Lives


Udupi, Jul 8: H1N1, also known as Swine Flu, which had spread its tentacles in the district during 2009, has become active in the district again. With the arrival of monsoon, the disease seems to have gained foothold in the coast this year. It is learnt that two persons from the district have died of swine flu during the last two months.

Nine persons were treated for swine flu at KMC Hospital, Manipal, which has been designated to treat this ailment, during May and June this year. Four among them died. Two of them were from this district, one was from Shimoga, while the other was from Bellary district. At present, a person from Shimoga district continues to be treated for swine flu and this patient is expected to be discharged in a couple of days.

This information was given by district health and family welfare officer, Dr Ramachandra Bairy. He said that the health department has taken preventive measures against the spread of the disease and also to treat the patients with swine flu symptoms promptly. He said that out of the two persons, who died of H1N1 in the district, one was from within Manipur primary health centre jurisdiction and other from Hebri. ?Out of two people from the same family from Hebri who developed symptoms of swine flu, one has recovered, while the other succumbed,? Bairy added.

H1N1 is back, claims 7 lives

July 9: With the monsoons, the dreaded H1N1 fever is back. Though precautionary measures have been taken, the virus has already caused seven deaths this year in the State, five of them just in the last couple of months. It is during this time of year that we need to take precautions. But we now have experience in controlling this virus. We have already sent out monsoon advisories to all districts to ensure that every case with H1N1 like symptoms gets treated at the earliest,? said Dr T.S. Cheluvaraj, joint director, communicable diseases, department of health and family welfare.

?There was one death reported in the month of May in Bengaluru, the remaining were from Bellary, Davangere, Shimoga, Gulbarga, Udupi and Tumkur,? said Dr Cheluvaraj. He said that this year, to date, the department has received 1007 samples for testing from across the State of which 45 samples have tested positive for H1N1.

Dr Cheluvaraj emphasised that the health department is better prepared now to deal with the virus. ?This year we are very well equipped and have more than sufficient stock of Tamiflu, which has been distributed to health centres even at the district level.? Instructions have been issued to healthcare professionals to be on the lookout for cases with symptoms of respiratory tract infections, cough, cold and running nose. ?As of now there are five centres in the State that are equipped to test samples for H1N1: NIMHANS, Narayana Nethralaya, Command Hospital and Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, and KMC Manipal, which takes care of samples in the coastal districts,? the doctor added.

?So far the number of cases coming to us for tests has been consistent and so too the positivity, but the monsoon is the season when there is a risk of incidence in such cases,? said Dr V. Ravi, head of the neuro-virology department at NIMHANS. At the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) only one case of H1N1 has been reported, that of a 62-year-old male. ?He has been treated and discharged from the hospital. But we know that the monsoons could be risky so we are geared up with adequate stock of medication,? said Dr Shashidhar Buggi, director, RGICD.

H1N1 claims Sagar woman’s life

SHIMOGA: Shobha, 27, of Bangalore who came to Sagar in Shimoga died of H1N1 at KMC Hospital, Manipal on Saturday. According to district medical officer Channa Basappa, the woman who lived in Subhashnagar was pregnant and developed fever 15 days ago.

After she tested positive, her family rushed her to Manipal where she was responding to treatment. But she died on Saturday. The department swung into action, holding a house-tohouse survey to verify if members were suffering from fever so that all precautions can be taken. He said a drive to educate the public on maintaining cleanliness during the monsoon and to prevent the movement of pigs in the town has been enforced.

CM Yeddyurappa and Union state minister of railways Muniyappa are visiting Sagar on Sunday to inaugurate the newly-converted broad gauge railway track between Sagar and Taluguppa.

You better watch out: H1N1 virus claims four lives in Karnataka

The H1N1 (swine flu) virus is on a comeback trail in Karnataka. According to statistics available with the Udupi district health office, four people have died due to swine flu since May 2011. Two people are undergoing treatment in Manipal and Udupi.

Speaking to DNA, Udupi district health officer Dr Ramachandra Bairy said: ?There have been isolated cases in the past three months. Two victims were from Udupi and two others hailed from Shimoga. Hebri (30 km from Udupi), Manipura (12 km from Udupi), Sagar (Shimoga district) and Bellary have reported one case each in the past three months.?

Bangalore hospitals are all geared up to tackle swine flu virus

The comeback of H1N1 virus in coastal Karnataka has put hospitals in Bangalore in a state of alert. Of the four people who died due to the virus on Saturday, one was a Bangalorean who was visiting her relatives in Sagar taluk of Shimoga district.

The city hospitals are vigilant to the virus by keeping themselves equipped with all the necessary facilities, including drugs and vaccines, alongside adequate number of doctors. These doctors have braced themselves to handle the pressure of treating as many infected patients.

DNA visited both government and private hospitals for a reality check and found them exuding confidence. The hospitals said that there was nothing to panic about.

There are enough vaccines and drugs available in the hospitals, and very few cases of the virus have been reported. The doctors shared more good news ? that the virus has changed its form.

?The virus is said to have entered the herd community as is the nature of all virus. Even in the past, when the virus attacked, it had made the human beings immune to the disease. So there is nothing to panic about,? said Dr H Paramesh, MD, Lakeside View Hospital, Ulsoor.

Dr Sudarshan Ballal, director, Manipal Hospital, too seconded his opinion. He said that in a few weeks, Manipal Hospital will have its own testing laboratory.

There are two testing facilities in Bangalore ? Nimhans and Narayana Health City.
The government hospitals, which generally are known to have had short supply of doctors, paramedics, and stocks of medicines, are working hard to set things right. The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) is now equipped with testing material as well as medication.

H1N1 cases in Udupi on the rise

H1N1, the influenza that shook the entire world, attacked Udupi district in August 2009 with Manipal Institute of Technology student Balasubramanium being the first victim.


Balasubramanium was infected with the influenza during his tour to London.

The H1N1 cases in Udupi are on the rise in the coast once again this year and two persons from the district out of 6 have died of H1N1 since the last two months. Speaking to Deccan Herald, DHO Dr Ramachandra Bairy informed that as many as 119 cases have been diagnosed till date at KMC Manipal, of which 32 have died since its detection in 2009, he added. In 2009, as many as 29 H1N1 cases were detected, of which one succumbed to death. In the year 2010, about 81 cases were diagnosed at KMC Manipal, of which 25 died due to H1N1.

In 2011, till date as many as 9 cases have been diagnosed in the district, of which 6 have succumbed to death. Of the 9 cases, three belong to Udupi district, he added. Briefing the measures taken to prevent this airborne influenza Bairy said that the health department has taken preventive measures against the spread of the disease and also to treat the patients with the symptoms. Out of the two persons, who died of H1N1 in the district, one was from within Manipur Primary Health Centre jurisdiction in Udupi taluk and other from Hebri.

Changing weather poses health concerns

BANGALORE: Owing to the city?s changing weather city hospitals are filled with patients complaining of viral fever, typhoid, malaria, wheezing and other respiratory disorders. Not just this, sporadic cases of leptospirosis are also being treated in hospitals.

The Victoria Hospital under the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) has been treating five to six viral fever cases every day. ?Compared to last month, there is a spurt in the number of cases. We are also treating patients with malaria and dengue like symptom during this season,? said Dr Raveendra KR, associate professor at Bangalore Medical College and Research Centre.

Patients have increased in the pediatric department at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health. Institute Director Dr Shivananda told The New Indian Express that compared to last year, there is a 10 per cent increase in the cases coming with wheezing problem. ?Almost one third of the OPD are cases with wheezing problems,? he said.

Even H1N1 fever like symptoms are being reported.

Nearly three to four patients have also been tested positive for H1N1 at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD).

However, Dr Gayathri, chief health officer, maintained that from January till today 17 confirmed cases of dengue and 12 of chikungunya have been reported in the city. Nearly 42 cases of H1N1 are reported which is very less compared to the last year which was 557. Besides, there are no malaria cases, she added.

Man infected with H1N1 dies in city


BANGALORE: 41-year-old Muniappa, an agriculturalist from Bagalgunte succumbed to H1N1 at Columbia Asia Hospital, Yeshwantpur, on Sunday evening.
According to Shanta Kumari, sister-inlaw of the deceased, also the corporator of Moodalpalya, Muniappa was suffering from fever for the past one week and was admitted to Sanjeevani Hospital at Bagalgunte.
?There were no signs of improvement, and eventually he developed breathing difficulty.
He was later admitted to Suguna Hospital where doctors confirmed that Muniappa was suffering from H1N1.
Since the hospital did not have the facility to treat H1N1 patients, he was referred to Columbia Asia Hospital.? she added.
Muniappa was admitted to Columbia Asia on Saturday, and on Sunday around 3.30 pm he died.
Kumari added, ?The area where Muniappa resided is close to a sanitary pipe which is connected to the drainage and a heap of garbage remains collected.
Mosquito menace is seen throughout the year.?

Hospitals stock up on vaccine after H1N1 alarm

After city witnesses a Swine Flu death some days ago, doctors urge vaccination to avoid outbreak of disease

With incidents of H1N1 infection coming to light, including the death of a 42-year-old a few days ago, city doctors have sounded an alarm.

They, along with the BBMP, are now urging citizens to get the required vaccination, which is available in the city.

According to records with the BBMP, in 2010, there were 2,042 cases of H1N1 reported with 51 deaths. This year till August 6, there have been 55 cases and three deaths.
