At least five children have died from measles complications, the Turkana county health department has confirmed.

The county said 295 measles cases have been reported in Turkana West subcounty.

Preventive health chief officer Peter Lomorukai said the first case was reported in March in Kalobeyei area of Turkana West and as from July 4, the cases had risen to 295 with five fatalities.

Lomorukai said the cases of measles have been reported in Turkana West because of the influx of refugees from South Sudan where measles outbreak was reported.

Turkana West hosts more than 300,000 refugees in Kakuma Refugee camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement.

Measles outbreak in Mombasa: Health officials launch vaccination campaign

The Mombasa County government has declared a measles outbreak following 34 reported cases in the Mvita and Likoni sub-counties.

According to the Department of Health Vaccines in Mombasa, 23 samples from Mvita and 11 samples from Likoni were confirmed positive for measles after being sent to Nairobi for testing.

“We conducted mass vaccination for 700 children two weeks ago, and we are currently carrying out a mop-up vaccination campaign in the Likoni area,” the head of Vaccine Remuneration in the Department of Health in Mombasa, Isaac Jiwa said...

Turkana County intensifies fight against measles

The County Government of Turkana has intensified community-based measles surveillance to end the persistent outbreak in Turkana West Sub-county.

Since March 2023, Turkana West has experienced a persistent second wave of measles outbreaks. Despite the mass vaccination campaign conducted in the region from June to July 2023, cumulatively, 694 cases and 20 mortalities have been reported.

Currently, Lokipoto and its neighbouring villages, especially Locharakan, in Letea Ward have become the epicentre of this outbreak; since November 19, 2023, reported measles cases stand at 121, with 8 mortalities​...
