Fever-control activities at the panchayat level

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Fever-control activities should be strengthened at the levels of the three-tier panchayats and an Additional Director of Health Services will monitor and review the activities at the district level, it was decided at a meeting called by Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy here on Wednesday to review the fever situation in the district.

The meeting was told that almost 99 per cent of the fever cases being reported in the district were simple viral fever, a seasonal infection with the commencement of every monsoon. No substantial increase in number of dengue cases had been reported.

Eighteen new cases of dengue were confirmed in the district on Wednesday.

District Medical Officer N. Sridhar said 10 mobile fever clinics were functioning in the district and two more would be started on Thursday, courtesy the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

The Minister asked the community medicine departments in the medical colleges to assist the district health administration whenever a cluster of dengue cases were reported from an area. Steps were taken to ensure that all health-care centres had sufficient stocks of medicines.

Dr. Sridhar said that with influenza A(H1N1) infection flaring up in the community, Tamiflu had been made available in all primary health centres.

As pregnancy seemed to be a high-risk factor for vulnerability to the infection, accredited social health activists under the NRHM, the health field staff and medical officers in the primary health centres had been directed to detect fever in pregnant women and start early treatment.

Pathanamthitta sees 53 dengue cases in 38 days

935 cases of viral fever reported from government hospitals on Wednesday

Health issue:Patients undergoing treatment for fever at the General Hospital in Pathanamthitta on Wednesday.

PATHANAMTHITTA: With two more confirmed cases of dengue fever, the total number of dengue cases in Pathanamthitta district in the past 38 days has gone up to 53 on Wednesday.
Talking to The Hindu here on Wednesday, Dr. Laila Divakar, District Medical Officer, said the department had launched an elaborate public awareness campaign in the problem-hit areas and other parts of the district in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease. According to official sources, as many as 935 cases of viral fever have been reported from various government healthcare centres in the district on Wednesday.

Health department sources said that a large number of viral fever cases, many of which suspected to be dengue, had been reported from Enadimangalam in the Parakode block.

A good number of suspected dengue fever cases have also been reported from the Elanthoor block and in the municipal limits of Pathanamthitta and Adoor.

The DMO said the Pathanamthitta General Hospital had the facility for conducting confirmatory test for dengue fever and all the Community Health Centres and the taluk hospitals in the district have got the facility for ?card test', making diagnosis easier. She said the disease was being dealt with at all hospitals as per the treatment protocol.

Official sources said the density of Aedes mosquito was found to be much higher in many areas of the district this year, reportedly owing to lack of sanitation and proper waste disposal. What was needed was proper public awareness for effective reduction of mosquito-breeding sources and the local self-government institutions should take the lead in this regard, said the sources.

Ironically, the local bodies and various other departments have not yet taken the issue seriously, leaving many places, even remote places, littered with solid waste, making them breeding places for flies and rodents.

So far, six chikungunya cases were confirmed in the district. Blood samples of 17 suspected cases had been sent for laboratory tests.

As mosquitoes were the major vectors of epidemics such as chikungunya, malaria and dengue fever, mosquito eradication programmes have been intensified in the district.

Regular fogging is undertaken to prevent mosquito breeding.

Dengue capital!

Express News ServiceExpress News ServiceFirst Published : 26 Jul 2010 03:08:45 AM ISTLast Updated : 26 Jul 2010 12:29:12 PM IST

A red alert has been declared in the capital city against the most dreaded disease carrier, ?the Aedes mosquito?.

Thiruvananthapuram, particularly the Corporation area, is under the severe threat of an outbreak of Dengue Fever. A public health emergency has been declared in the city area anticipating an outbreak of dengue.

A study conducted by the Health Department has found that about 40 percent of the total dengue cases reported in the State are from Thiruvananthapuram. This year, in seven months, 268 cases of dengue have been reported from the Corporation area.

??The intermittent rains which are continuing are extremely conducive for the breeding of Aedes mosquito which spreads dengue fever. The monsoon is expected to continue for some time. In this context, district health authorities and public health experts have predicted an impending major outbreak of dengue in the Corporation area unless massive measures are taken at every household,?? says the report.

The study has found that dengue has been detected in all the 82 wards of the Corporation area, of which Vallakkadavu and Thiruvallom have been declared as high risk areas with maximum number of dengue cases being reported from here.

Other high risk areas in the city are Sasthamangalam, Medical College, Poonthura, Karamana, Valiyathura, Peroorkada, Manacaud and Pattom, from where more than ten cases of dengue have been reported.

In January this year, 32 dengue cases were reported from the Corporation area, in February it was 30, March 35, in April it came down to 19 but it rose to 45 in May, 58 in June and 42 cases were reported till July 20.

The district administration and the health authorities have unleashed a massive campaign for the source reduction of mosquitoes in every household and open area.

In a letter sent to the Corporation and district health authorities, the District Collector has said, ??As you are aware, the flight range of Aedes mosquito is around 100 metres and it breeds in artificial collection of water seen around us. In spite of efforts of the City Corporation and district health authorities, mosquito density can be further brought down only by action taken at each house and each campus.??

The District Collector has warned of strict action, including legal measures, against the private or public organisations or institutions which were not ready to take effective measures for source reduction.

The Corporation authorities have called a meeting of the school and college Principals and heads of government and private offices in the Corporation area on July 27 to discuss the issue.

Apart from this, twenty teams under the leadership of health inspectors have been formed to monitor the situation in all the 82 wards. Starting Sunday, the district health authorities have called for dry days on all Sundays and Mondays for at least three weeks as part of source reduction campaign.

On Sundays, dry day should be observed in households, slum areas and also in open campuses. On Mondays, dry day should be observed in schools, colleges, government and private institutions.
